DO YOU REALLY NEED A CREDIT CARD?

griz by griz Walking(November 2008) (rank 334th)

Are there people out there who would like the convenience of a credit card without the temptation of overspending and paying high interest rates?

Do you know you can get a Visa debit card through most financial institutions? With a Visa debit you have all the benefits of having

a credit card. You can pay your bills online, link it to your paypal account, make online purchases.  If you need to purchase train or plane tickets you can do it over the phone or online.

The only difference is you can't spend money you don't have. You can only spend money you already have in your account. So technically it is a credit card that you use like a debit card. You still have to be careful with security as anybody can steal your details but in that case they would not be able to go beyond what is in your nominated account. And you have to make sure your account has the available funds before making a payment with your card.

Another thing I like about it is I don't pay any annual fee. I'm not sure if all institutions are the same  but my credit union doesnt charge me any fees to have it.

I decided to get a Visa debit because I didnt want the temptation of having a credit card, but I wanted it so I could make instant payments through paypal. Although you can still have a paypal account without having a credit card.

I know there are some who can use a credit card actually to their advantage and never pay any interest. To those, Well Done.

I know myself, that it would be easy for me to fall into the trap of using a credit card as a backup when I''m having a tight week and I end up buying extra food and stuff that I could probably scrape by without. I know.  I've had a credit card before.  Once you get the balance up a bit and start paying interest it can be very hard to get on top of.

My belief is don't spend money you don't have on everyday items. If your worried about an emergency, put a little bit aside every week and don't touch it.

Re: DO YOU REALLY NEED A CREDIT CARD?

I have just recently hear about these visa debit cards and I think it is the way of the future you are more likely to be careful with this money because it is yours and not the banks and will make you think twice about your spending. Just recently I have been leaving money in an account and using it in that way instead of using my credit card so much.

Re: DO YOU REALLY NEED A CREDIT CARD?

Fantastic advice!!!  I too have fallen into the credit card trap before and what you say about (a) buying things you can scrape by without and (b) once the balance gets up a bit it can be hard to get on top of .... SO TRUE!  Good on you for writing this and giving those who have never considered debit cards something to ponder!!  Sharon

Re: DO YOU REALLY NEED A CREDIT CARD?

LOL credit cards are handy if you are in a pinch, plus they are a good way to create a credit rating... IF YOU PAY THEM OFF.  I am happy to say that I just paid off and gave one mega one the flick and I am staying with a smaller one that currently has 8mth interest free.  There are many options out there, however if anyone isn't able to pay their card in full without incurring interest; they shouldn't have one.  The debit cards are a great idea, especially for purchasing things online, which is usually cheaper and so much more convenient that hot footing it down to the shops, (especially if you abhor shopping and find it a complete waste of time like me).

Re: DO YOU REALLY NEED A CREDIT CARD?

That's a point i didn't consider about the credit rating. And I've talked to quite a few people who use their credit card for emergencies, bills, and pay the balance within the interest free period, never paying any interest. Even getting extra interest by leaving their money in the bank. Unfortunatley as you know a large number of people spend too much, pay too much interest.

So I guess that's why I wrote this. I talk to people who don't realise the debit card option. I think it 's a good option for families who are unemployed. It's too easy to overspend on the credit card when you can get by without it (I think it's called struggling). But the families suffer more in the long term with the extra debt.

Also talk to pensioners who dont know that they are entitled to a deeming account with a  bit higher interest rate and no account keeping fees. Thats another story though.

I'm with you on the shopping thing. I hate shopping so much and do most of it online these days.

Re: DO YOU REALLY NEED A CREDIT CARD?

Hi there,

This is another great article from you . . WELL done!!

I have always worked on the belief that if you were mean't to have something then you would find the money without the need of a credit card!! This has worked well for my husband and I as we can proudly say that we OWN everything in our home including our car! . . We have NO loans, no higher purchase agreements and NO credit cards . . .

We are however looking into getting a Debit Card as this will help us as I do 90% of my shopping online. . .  For me with my disability this is the best way for us and I have became quite good at tracking down bargains, most of my friends and family ask to to look around before making purchase these days . .

Cheers Kellz
