Problem speech in toddlers

oldgirl by oldgirl Crawling(November 2008) (rank 500+)

Re: 2yr old word wise?
Asked by smashie

Question:

my two yr od girl has been putting y sounds onto the end of al her words eg, bike is now bikey, drink to drinky and other words also but she cant seem to

say her own name ebonie she can say ebs either but she can say christopher and stormy. does anyone kno why shes would be putting a y sound on her words and how can i teach her to say her name?

My Advice:

Don't worry too much, she is only two and seems to be grasping the language pretty well. Syllables don't even seem to be a problem. I suggest that you just remodel the words so that she constantly hears the correct term e.g. she says "can I have a drinky/" you reply "you can have a drink of water" or whatever you are offering. Try not to answer "yes" or "no" as this does not remodel the correct term. In my experience trying bribery such as "when you say drink properly, you can have one." just seems to add tension and cause dismay. She will eventually stop of her own accord.

also try not to allow older people to mimic her speech. This often happens when people think it is cute. These actions only prolong the problem.'

Hope this advice helps - patience is usually the key.

Re: Problem speech in toddlers

Hi there,

I totally agree with this advice . .  Two year olds go through many different stages and their speech seems to undergo many changes during this age . .  As long as noone mimics or teases then things will most likely settle on thier own . .  If by 3an a half things are still not right with speech then it really is time to seek professional help . . .

cheers Kellz
