Tin Can Telephones

cheleinkal by cheleinkal Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 20th)
Tin Can Telephones
You Will Need

2 clean empty soup size cans
1 long piece of thin cotton string
1 thick nail & Hammer

Firstly decorate the cans.
Having removed the original labels you can paint the cans OR Glue wrapping paper onto them
(quicker and less mess)  The best way to do this is to use the original label as a template and trace around it onto the under side of the wrapping paper and cut it out.  Aquadhere or shearers glue or white craft glue (all the same thing) is the best glue to use for this, smere a thin sheen of the glue evenly across the under side of the paper and wrap it around the can.  Allow about 20-30 minutes to dry.

Extra Tip:
Having it a bit longer so you can fold it over the open lip is a good way to make extra sure there are no sharp bits.

Then simply drive a large nail through the centre of the bottom of your empty cans.  Thread the string through each can and tie off with a large knot.

Extra Tip:
Have your little friends go into separate rooms and put your feet up whilst they amuse them selves chatting for hours.

If their imaginations aren’t working here are some starter ideas for them.
Space ship to Earth, Race Car to Pit Crew, Home maker to Shop Keeper, Animal owner to Vet, Mummy to Daddy, Secret Agent 008 to Super Spy 006.

Extra Tip:
The string has to be tight for it to work.

Wonderful fun!
These are so much better than the walkie talkies that we can buy in the shops.  They are more versatile.

Extra tip
Yes gr8est and you can explain the science as well (educational) the vibrations move down the string to the tin where your ear is which is why the extra tip is important to hear loud and clear it does indeed need to be tight

back to basics
I know my Mum made them for us and my brother and I used them ALL the time, they do /did work and we had a ball with them.  mum had had them when she was a kid too.  I think it's a shame that some of these tried and true old games or things to make and do fall by the way side and get forgotten.

Good enough for me, good enough for my kids................or will be when she's big enough.

Have Fun

Telephones
I remember this from when I was a kid and it was fun then, though I can't remember if we ever heard anything! Like the suggestions of characters.
