Question:

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has advice for me. My two and a half year old son still drinks warm milk from a bottle. Usually it is only one or two bottles

a day (arvo and night) and some days, like today, it was 2 and a half bottles before bed. He eats 3 meals a day and doesn't like to snack. He does have a healthy diet like fruit, vegies, etc. I have tried giving him milk in a sippy cup and he hates it and whinges till he gets it in a bottle. He has a younger sister, 9 mths, who drinks formula from a bottle so I think it will be even harder for him to stop because he sees her drink her milk and he wants his own. He has flavoured milk in a cup but doesn't drink a lot of it, maybe a few sips.

We don't want him to stop drinking milk altogether so we are weary of just going cold turkey off the bottles. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

My Advice:

Hi!

My friend who works as a nanny, has been giving me lots of great ideas and advice and we have actually chatted about this, as I asked about the pros and cons to bottle feeding. She recommended that when the time came to wean toddler from bottle, to do it with good humour, persistance and patience! Start slow and treat it as the important milestone that it is. You can have a little going away party for the bottle and get bub to place them in a box and to say goodbye to it.

Perhaps a little brivery wouldn't go astray, try givng him plenty of encouragement and/or little awards, for giving it up.

It's important for him to know that he is a big boy and that he can drink out of a cup, were as his little sister is still a baby so that's ok. Also, be careful how you act as your own personal feelings may be transparent to your little boy. If you feel anxious, he'll pick up on that. After all, when all is said and done, he is growing up and a part of you might not want that!

My friend said that this is harder for mums that it sounds and I completely understand, so don't be discouraged if it doesn't work straight away. I hope this helped!

Don't forget that drinking milk in bed can be very very bad for their teeth! (My daugheter's grandma is a dental hygenist so I hear this alllll the time!)

Re: Toddler drinks milk from bottle

Our little boy is 3 in few months and he drinks from cups, sippy cups, bottles and baby bottles... It depends on where we are and what we are doing...  He is very grown up in general, however if he is sick and wants a baby bottle to make him feel better, or we are going to be out and about, I don't mind if he asks for a bottle.  It is such a small thing to be concerned about, it has never bothered us and certainly hasn't hindered him in any way.
