Save $$$ on snack foods

c1tph by c1tph Standing(November 2008) (rank 500+)

Instead of wasting money on prepackaged convenience foods for the kids, buy products that can be made up into snack size portions and stored in small snap lock bags or small containers.  Examples of food that can be portioned for the kids include crackers, large bags of chips, homemade popcorn

& mini cookies, large bags of lollies, fruit salad eg grapes and cut strawberries, cereal eg nutrigrain and miniwheats, dried fruit and nuts, bread sticks, carrot & celery sticks, any drinks poured into refillable bottles.  Of course some of these are for treats only, but buying these things when out on a day trip, shopping or long car trip can be very expensive.

Re: Save $$$ on snack foods

Another quick and cheap snack food is Duros.  They are easy to make and you can flavor them many different ways.  Here is an article about them.

I find your advice about making up your own packs of snacks very good and we do the same thing.  I was a little alarned to see things like cookies, lollies and chips listed as snacks though.

Re: Save $$$ on snack foods

Has anyone tried using cereal as snacks? We've been using Fruity Bites (Uncle Toby's I think), and I put about 30g in a snap lock bag and send it to school. Not much different to sending biscuits, only perhaps a little healthier, and a change from other things he gets bored with.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing with nutri grain - after all, they're not much better than lollies!

Yeah they are kinda the healthier lollie option lol. Or a healthier biscuit option. To me they are a bit of a junk food but not too bad of one lol.

Re: Save $$$ on snack foods

Yes our wee man loves to come home and eat a bowl of just about any dried cereal with his fingers as a snack too... Isn't it great!

Re: Save $$$ on snack foods

I think this is good advice.  Snack foods are so expensive and nutritionally not that good.  There are options out there that are better for you and the pocket.  Sometimes i think it is the packaging the kids like too, rather than the food inside it!

great tips here, we also buy banana chips in bulk and apricot logs from the health shop and portion it into snap lock backs from snacks at school

I've done this myself to give more choices for the lunchbox. There are so few good choices that are already prepackaged.

Re: Save $$$ on snack foods

So true. Not planning ahead can cost you Huge amounts just for a day trip. I also take water bottles. Eating treats all day can leave you feeling pretty sick with soft drink on top of it all.
