Family Budget

Philosopher13 by Philosopher13 Standing(November 12th) (rank 500+)

For the past five years I have been in charge of the family budget. I haven't always been perfect, but I have learned a lot from personal experience and from working at a bankruptcy law firm where we used to teach our clients how not to get into financial trouble.

First, you need to make a list of all your monthly expenses ranging from necessity to luxury. Then if possible, figure out exactly how much income you bring in on a regular basis and how often. Write out a calender of what days you get paid and how much, as well as what and when your bills are due. On the calendar, subtract your necessities from your paycheck first, then see how much is left over if any. From the leftovers, you can then decide what you want to put away and what you want to spend on what. Not everyone is going to be happy all the time, but being debt free and/or being able to pay your bills on time is something that the whole family can benefit from.

I highly recommend doing the budget with all contributing partners and spouses. Everyone who needs to know needs to be kept in the loop or else mistakes happen and banks get overdrawn. Keep track of your budget whether it be on paper or the computer. Also, as your kids get older, encourage and help them to start their own budget.

Re: Family Budget

Trying to keep the outgoings below the incomings is harder & harder these days. The advice offered is really good, however there is always the "out of the blue" expenses that catch you unawares. Someone getting sick & the cost of doctors visit & then the pharmaceuticals & if you work for yourself the lost time & therefore lost income. Saving for a rainy day is a good idea & teaching your children that we just can't have it all is also important.

This is extremely hard as today's parents & kids seem to have the notion that kids can & should have it all, whenever they want.

Budgeting & financial responsibility is stressful & difficult, but does pay off in the longer term.

Re: Family Budget

I think budgeting should be a skill that most couples should tackle in the first few years of marriage. There is nothing more stressful than going into financial trouble. I bet it has broken many marriages.  My husband and I went into our marriage with credit card debts, but thankfully we've gotten that out of the way before we started a family.

Good advice!

Re: Family Budget

We started out with the only debt being the mortgage. But going straight into fertility treatment meant there was never enough money, and no way to budget effectively. The credit card never gets paid off now and we just don't seem to be able to work out how to make ends meet without it.

Re: Family Budget

This is great advice. I'm just wondering what strategies to use when working out the expenses shows that there's too much essential spending for the income to cover.
