Garden on a Plate

Anonymous Author (August 2006)

My kids love to go on nature walks, a couple of weeks ago we took a little container and filled it with twigs off trees and flowers, rocks ect. and we made a little garden on a plate, they loved it and water it every day, so I thought I

would share how to do it.  I used moss but not everyone has access to that so it doesn't really matter what you use

You need:

  • Old dinner plate
  • Potting mix
  • Moss, grass and small flowers
  • Cuttings from shrubs or trees
  • small pebbles/stones
  • Jar Lid
  • Kitchen foil
  1. Put a 2cm layer of compost on the plate press moss into about 3/4 of the area
  2. Put small pebbles around the plate
  3. Push a fir twig into the soil to make a little tree, push the flowers, shrubs and grass into the soil
  4. Mould kitchen foil around jar lid to make a little pond, cut out a circle of foil and draw fish onto it and fit into bottom of lid

I gave them a spray bottle to spray it with but the flowers need to be replaced as they tend to die, but they love it.

Love the grarden plate idea!

What a great idea you have. My 17 month old son loves to pick up rocks when we take a walk.  When he was a few months younger, we couldn't even make it out of the driveway - our driveway is gravel. But now that he's older, his vision seems to extend more than a feet or so around him and he realizes that if we walk farther he can find more interesting rocks. When we get inside, I never know what to do with the treasures...  but now I do! Thanks.

Gardens on a plate
We used to do these at Easter, if I remember rightly. They were always fun, especially as my brother and sisters would be all in competition for the best. We also got small animals and put them in, too, to make a countryside scene.
