Potty training a boy as a single mom!

rnrharris08 by rnrharris08 Crawling(November 15th) (rank 500+)

LOL, here is some advice I think may be some help to a few people out there.  Although I am married now, and my kids daddy finally stepped up to the plate and we are friends now, I was at one point a single mom!

I had a hard

time potty training my son to pee standing up, and I cant really remember who gave me this advice, but I thought I will pass it along!

Step one, explain to your boy that boys stand up and girls sit down, intresting way to show why its this way.  Get a squirt bottle fill it with water, sit down on the patty with your clothes on of course, and spray the bottle so he can see that it goes everywhere, next squirt it on the toilet seat to show why he needs to lift the seat to pee, ask him if he wants to sit in pee, next stand up like a man would and squirt the bottle so he can see that it works way better for a guy that way.

Step two, get a hand full of fruit loops or cheerios and toss them into the toilet, get the water bottle, lift the seat, then try to squirt the water into the hole of the cereal.

Step three, get stickers and a poster board and tell him everytime he makes it into the cereal holes he will get one sticker after the number of stickers you feel is right, tell him he can chose one reward, either new toy or to go to a place her likes.

Step four...last....leave a box of the cereal in the bathroom and everytime he says he has to go potty take him and let him get the ceareal and try to aim for the holes and watch the fun begin.

My son had a blast doing this and little by little he started to do it without the stickers and cereal!!!!!!! , so he pees standing up now without getting in all over the seat and he is 5, wish I could say that about my hubby, LOL, just kidding.

Anyways thats a fun little advice for single moms of boys!!!!!

Fantastic advice.  As a single mother of a girl I shall be storing these fun ideas for when I meet that elusive 'Mr Right' let alone for when/ if I am ever blessed with more children.  (Though is he is 'Mr Right' maybe he will not need this instruction, hehehe)

Peace

Great tips! Love the details.

Thankfully, we didn't have this trouble with our son. I started him sitting down and it just transitioned to standing up naturally. But I think because he is in preschool where he could see other boys helped a whole lot.
