Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis

soozntone by soozntone Standing(November 2008) (rank 500+)

After the birth of my second child I experienced pain whilst attempting to have sex.  I broached this with my Obstetrician at the time and was informed “everything looked fine”.  So I just avoided sex for a while and by the time my son was 6 month old

the symptoms had disappeared.   I assumed this was a one of thing and all but forgot about it.

I have just recently had my third child and am again experiencing pain when attempting to have sex.  Due to the lack of diagnosis from my other obstetrician I did not raise my concern with my current obstetrician.  However after much searching on the internet I came across information relating to a condition called Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis.

Atrophic Vaginitis is commonly associated with Menopausal women.  However it can occur during lactating women due to the changed Estrogen levels.

The symtoms include (taken from the following web site

 http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSENF000/9339/9504.html)

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal itch or a burning sensation
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Light bleeding after intercourse

This is a treatable condition.  If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms speak with your doctor / obstetrician.

All three of my children were born via c-section so this condition is not related to tearing or episiotomy's.  Below are links to a couple more web sites with good informaiton.  Please do not try treating via alternative / natural medicines without consulting a professional as treatment can affect your milk supply.

Re: Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis

I had a terrible case of vaginits too. Doctor kept prespribing antibiotics but they would only work temporarily. It kept coming back. I was so frustrated until I found a more natural permenent cure. http://www.bvrelief.com I hope this helps.

Re: Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis

Was this purely while you were breastfeeding?  I just ask as I had similar symptoms after my son - along with a complete lack of desire.  Due to various complications around his birth I had a contraceptive implant put in after his birth.  It wasn't until I had this removed when we went to try for baby number 2 that I realised that what I had assumed was just something hormonal from having had a baby, was actually the implant.  For some women this may be the case, but I am interested to learn it could also be related to feeding, if I understand you correctly....?

Yes, this is in part related to feeding and in part to being pregnant itself..  Your hormone levels change when pregnant and feeding, and only return to normal after all of this is finished.

Re: Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis

gee i have the complete lack of desire thing going on too, im just so not interested and so not missing it so i hope if only for my hubbys sake the desire comes back and for mine that the pain goes away!!  i will have to let you know if it all continues or not after i am done breastfeeding.  bub is 9.5mo and still no change for my condition so luckily my hubby is very patient and understanding although feeling a bit frustrated and sorry for himself haha oh so sad :( i just dont miss it....

Plus I think on top of the hormonal thing, there is the fact that you are catering to a very needy little person and you give all day - sometimes by the end of the day I just want to be quiet and still and not being touched - kind of sad really, but I just feel all "touched" out - let alone the hormones....  Still, it does come back!

Re: Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis

Thank you for sharing this, I thought having a baby would have some effect but I have not wanted sex due to pain for 6months after my birth!  At least now I know that maybe things will all go back to normal soon, I was worried something had changed down there so much that I would never enjoy sex again so thanks for your article!

Re: Lactational Atrophic Vaginitis

I also suffered from endometriosis but wasnt even torn so I was real confused why it would hurt so much with no birth trauma there!
