tips for dealing with a child that runs away from home

rcp-432 by rcp-432 Standing(November 18th) (rank 500+)

having a child that runs away from home is a very stress situation to be in for anybody because your biggest fears come into play like

  • are they hurt
  • are they still alive
  • has someone grabbed them
  • are they in danger
  • have they been
    bashed
  • have they been sexually assualted
  • am i going to see them again

the best thing to do in these situations if its happening with your child is to

  • remain calm
  • think of any places your child might plan on going like friends places, youth groups beaches and local tenage gang hangouts
  • make the police aware of the situation so they can help locate your child because if you run off searching  ,your child could return and your not there and this possibly could make the situation worse

the reason i say this last one is because the child may have ran off because of a stressful situation they are dealing with and may need to talk to you about it

  • DO NOT get angry even though your  first instincts is to do this
  • ask the child calmly if they can explain the reasons they feel that they need to run away for

and please listen to your child and what they say sometimes you may be shocked on the outcome or you may be happy  that they have at least trusted you enough to be brave enough to say something to you

  • gain counselling for large problems
  • be there as support person to your child
  • keep a journal if it keeps happening so if the child services gets involved then you can show them ever measure you have taken to ensure the safety of your child

i sincerly hope none of you lovely parents have to go through this but if its happens hopefully this can be a good reference to you

Well written!

And bang on about the journal to cover yourself in case Child Protection calls. Right on the money. you been hanging out with social worker's again? You took words right out of my mouth!

The bullets worked nicely for this advice, good one there. your writing has defintely improved over the last month. You also did a lovely job of contrasting what one wants to do with what one should do. Well done.

Re: tips for dealing with a child that runs away from home

thanks for reading

and with the journal it means your protecting yourself if they choose to show up on your doorstep and you can show you have made every effort to control the childs behaviour and then you can also show what has helped and what hasnt  so they can work with the family  better

and if your saying  the journal is a good thing to do thats a heads up for us because of your work.

thanks again

great info.

I thought about running away a number of times but i knew i would be beaten if i came home and at that time i had no idea on what my dad's home number was or how to get to my dads.
