A typical routine for a baby : (when you arrive home from hospital)

kmp by kmp In Nappies(November 18th) (rank 500+)

* Baby wakes for a feed (probably feeding 3 hourly)

*Change their nappy (if they are screaming feed first and maybe change them in between sides or at the end of complete feed)

*Offer first breast (they may take approx. 20 minutes to feed on one side)

*Burp

*Offer second breast (again may take 20 minutes)

*Burp

*Change nappy if you didn't do so before feed

*Lay them on the floor (unwrapped as they should be settled after their feed). Give them about 20 minutes or so floor time. If they have a bit of a cry, pick them up, give them a burp and put them back on the floor. Then wrap them up and put them into bed (preferably awake)

*Baby may have a cry not long after you put them down. (This is usually when they get wind. Probably the motion as you lay then down gives them wind). Pick them up burp them and put them straight back down. A settled content baby should put themselves off to sleep.

*Baby should sleep for approx. 2 1/2 hours, until next feed (this is until around 2-3 weeks).

*Repeat process. If baby wakes after 2 hours or so and they are feeding 3 hourly give them a bath ar change their nappy and try and hang them out until the 3 hour mark.

*A baby will get what it needs in about the first 20 minutes of a feed. What it doesn't get then it will never get.

*For the first couple of weeks that's all your baby should do is pretty much drink and sleep.

*When you get home from hospital, baby may have their days and nights mixed up. Here they will sleep for long periods through the day and be awake at night. You have to adjust their time clock. You may need to wake them up after about 4 hours or so through the day, feeding them at regular intervals during the day and then let them wake at night when they want a feed, providing it is at least 3 hourly in between. They say that if you fill your baby up through the day then they will be more content at night. Adjusting their time clock is fairly important as otherwise you could be awake all night.
