Research Papers: Notorious Mistakes Students Commit

gloriaevans by gloriaevans In Nappies(November 2008) (rank 500+)

With the numerous academic requirements that they have – research papers experiments, essays, final exams – students cannot help but be overwhelmed by the amount of schoolwork that they need to accomplish. Hence, it is not surprising to see bleary-eyed students almost sleepwalking in campus halls to attend their classes.

Albeit difficult and demanding, these requirements are part of student life. Hence, instead of being frustrated every time professors assign research papers or other requisites that necessitate writing, students might as well embrace their destiny and explore ways on how to get decent marks.

Since there are numerous guidelines for effective writing, students can improve their writing skills better by knowing what not to do. This approach is pretty much like knowing the exceptions rather than remembering all the rules.

1.       Use of casual language

Students need to keep in mind that research papers are academic in nature and therefore necessitate a formal tone. Contractions are informal and students should avoid these in scholastic writing. Slangs, fragments, and figures of speech are expressions that should not be part of academic papers.

2.       Irrelevant information

When students write their research papers, they must ensure that only relevant information is included. Padding the paper with immaterial data will only backfire, as professors will surely stumble upon unrelated facts or figures.

3.       Not describing illustrations

Illustrations can either make or break a research paper. Students can use graphs, charts, and diagrams to effectively make their point and substantiate their arguments. However, these illustrations need to be discussed in the paper. It would be a point against the students if there were visual aids in the paper left unexplained.

4.       Shallow Analysis

Professors evaluate research papers based on the depth of the students' analysis. This is where most students get failing marks. If the paper fails to exhibit critical scrutiny of the subject matter, this means that students glossed over their paper and did not make an effort to substantiate their claims and defend their arguments.

5.       Confusing Content

Another crucial element in academic writing is providing transitions. Students will touch upon several ideas and concepts in their research that are essential in establishing the significance of their study. The challenge is for students to tie up these concepts into a cohesive whole because no matter how great the ideas are, if these are disjointed concepts, the readers will not fully appreciate the study.

With a heads-up on what to avoid, students will no longer dread their research papers or any other writing tasks their professors will assign. These tips will go a long way in helping students get decent grades and can even salvage their conditional marks.

Re: Research Papers: Notorious Mistakes Students Commit

Cheating is a despicable trait and encouraging students to cheat is deplorable. Encouraging a student who may be feeling stressed and overwhelmed to cheat, rather than seek guidence and help through their Tutor is in my view insupportable.

Any student found to be cheating by procuring the skills of another in the manner adivsed in the link, could and rightly should be shown the front door of their Faculty and University.

Once on the rocky path it becomes harder to give up, students please DONT do it. If overwhelmed and finding things getting beyond you, visit your Tutor or any approachable member of The Faculty. Proffs do not want students to fail, honestly they dont, looks bad on them in the long run,LOL.

Also the stigma if caught will, follow the student for the rest of their working life.

True in life work placement the skill of being able to procure others to get the job done is valuable, but does not apply in academia at this level.

This article in my oppinion could have been excellent advice, untill ruined by the link which draws in the insecure, struggling or arrogant student.

Winnie.

Re: Research Papers: Notorious Mistakes Students Commit

There are some great indicators to follow here when writing a paper.

However, I am slightly confused as the link is to an essay-writing service.  Surely you are not promoting that students get someone else with a better style to write their work for them.  If they achieve a good grade then it will not be down to their hard work and dedication to their dreams in life, but someone else that they paid - something that was always discouraged when I was in University at least.

Do you write research papers for other people to present as their own work?  Is that ethical?
