Re: Fish oil

Question:
I have heard fish oil is good for children. Any adivse on what it is especially good for and how much is ok to give to a child. I have a 10 year old boy.
My Advice:
Before I begin the following information is what I remember from researching and asking my doctor so please only use it as a guide.
Not only do I suggest fish oil for children, I would recommend it for adults too! I found that fish oil given to violent prisoners, made them behave less violently! Fish oil can both prevent and treat Depression, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, ADHD and Anger/Aggression but unfortunately this is not the case for all. The one important ingredient that fish oil contains is called “docosahexaenoic” (DHA) acid. This acid is said to have drastic impact upon the brain as well as the nervous system. People with the aforementioned disorders have low levels of DHA. Both fish (good examples, tuna, mackerel, ocean trout, sardines) and fish oil is the best source of Omega3 fatty acids. It keeps the heart healthy by minimizing the risks of rhythm disorders, helps the blood to clot and vessels running smoothly. Countries such as Japan that consume large amounts of fish were announced the worlds lowest risk for heart disease. Other studies I read up on concluded that fish oil also helped to prevent impaired vision and brain development in children, taking it while pregnant can reduce the risks of allergies, increase your child's IQ and decreases the chances of Post Natal Depression. In obesity fish oil can reduce cravings for fatty foods, prevent diabetes and reduce the risk of stroke and cardiac death by up to 50%. The reason people take FISH OIL and not just eat FISH is because of mercury contamination. In older people fish oil can relieve the awful pain of arthritis.
I buy fish oil all the time from NUTRIWAY (Omega-3 Complex) the bottle contains 90 capsules. Each 1000 mg of fish oil capsule contains:
300 mg of Omega-3 Marine Triglycerides which is equivalent to 180 mg of Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and 120 mg of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). The recommended dosage for adults is one capsule, three times a day with meals. This one is not for children.
However for children many researchers cannot agree upon the amount of fish oil that children should consume. While this is true many in the medical profession recommend 1000 mg per day. Please note this is just an estimate and should not be taken literally. It would be best to ask your local doctor.
If your child has previously shown any signs of hypersensitivity or bleeding disorders do NOT give your child fish oil. Please tell your doctor if your son is taking any medications before deciding.
