getting children reading books from an early age

Getting children to read books from an early age is the first step to a life long love of books. You can get books for babies at first that are colourful and made out of a soft plastic so they can play with them. The when they get a bit

older they can have the really sturdy carboard books at first they just like to look at the pictures but you can easily wipe them over if they get dirty but I still have a few stashed away with a few teeth marks in them. When my kids were little when ever I got the groceries I would always get them a little golden book they are still very cheap to buy and after a while you can build up a collection. I joined a mail order book club and every month I would let them choose a couple of books they would like it is nice for them to own their own books, but going to a library and borrowing books is also good as they can get out books and borrow them for a month and best of all it costs nothing.

My kids also found going to the library an adventure so many books to choose from we use to spend and hour or two their sometimes they would sit down and have a read  before we went home there is something nice about the atmosphere of a library. Reading books can be very relaxing as your imagination takes you off into another world you really do lose track of time. My oldest son who is now 26 is a book fanatic one of his favourite places to go is a second hand book store to him it is like being in a lolly shop, once he is finished with the book if he doesn't want to keep it he will pass it on to a friend.

I still have all my kids books put away in plastic boxes as they are all in their teens now they would not part with them they are keeping them for the kids that they will have someday. I often look at them and still remember the joy the books use to bring them and still have the occasional read when I am doing an annual clean and making sure they are all still in good order.

Re: getting children reading books from an early age

I think reading to your childres is very important from a early age, my children have all had books since they were babies, we have books in every bedroom and our family plus boxes of them in the garage, my children read everynight before they go to sleep.

My youngest T who is 7 is always reading she gets out teddy bears and dolls puts them all in a row and reads to them just as if she were a teacher.

I would recomend you start reading to you babies as soon as you can, it does help when they hit school age.

Re: getting children reading books from an early age

This is something very important to me personally.  I'm an elem. ed. major and I really feel that if the importance of reading  is fostered at a young age, the child will be more successful in school and develop a life long love of learning hopefully.  If one can't read well, it makes everything else more difficult for them.  I started reading to Bella when she was only 5 months old or so and she always loved sitting in my lap or daddy's lap while being read a story.  She also began to 'read' early.  Not actual reading because she is only 3, but she pretends to read, and knew how to turn the page and how the reading process worked from very early on.  It makes me happy seeing her turning the pages of a book and telling her own version of the story based on the pictures she sees.  We also enjoy storytime at the library because it is a fun and free activity for little ones who aren't in school yet.

Great advice. My kids have books that used to belong to their daddy when he was a boy. We have always taught my son to respect books and he has a large bookcase in his room and in 3 years i have to say i have never had to fix a book because he has ripped pages out.
