Question:

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any advice..... I have an alcoholic partner, who is asking for professional help to kick the habit. I don't know where to turn as I don't want to burden my

family and his are all drinkers. I am at my wit's end, I don't want my kids to grow up thinking they need to drink to be social especially the 3yo (who is his son, other 2 are mine from previous)  I am in melbourne, victoria, Aus. Does anyone know where to start???

My Advice:
That is great that your partner wants to get help, that's the first big hurdle overcome!! As for where to go, Alcoholics Anonymous have a website that enables you to search in your area for meetings etc:

 http://www.alcoholicsanonymous.org.au/

or contact your local Uniting Care branch (they have an alcohol and other drugs dept which could steer you in the right direction of support groups etc).

All the best

Re: Where to get help?

I was also in the same situation with my mother give your local hospital a call .

my local hospital has a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center this can be a good start as the withdrawal symtoms are not pretty and something that children probably shouldnt see as i can imagine it would be quite scary for a child.

Once he has gotten over that first hurdle regular meeting with support groups such as alcoholics anonymus is vital .
