Re: breastfeeding vs bottle
Asked by Melons

Question:

My baby is two weeks old and we have been having trouble breastfeeding. she started to lose too much weight and the doctor in the neonatal unit told me to top her up with

formula after a breastfeed. this made her put on plenty of weight and she is at birthweight again. My dilemma is that the lactation consultant we just saw wants me to cut out the formula. Last night  she was on the breast for an hour and still wasn't satisfied so made up just 50ml of formula and gave it to her. she downed the 50ml and was satisfied so i don't know if i should listen to the lactation consultant. any advice?

My Advice:

Hi

I know exactly what you are talking about I had this problem with  my  youngest child she was always hungry never  seemed full I was feeding her every hour I thought this would pass after a couple of days she cried constantly no matter how much i breastfed her it made no difference then she got diahorea it was green and didnt smell right instinct told me that I had to do something so I sent my husband to the store to get formula as soon as I gave her a bottle she settled down and slept for a full 4 hours I was exhausted so this was heaven by later that night her bowe movements were normal to I contacted my mid wife and told what I had done and she told me that my  daughter was getting too much hind milk and not enough full milk I did the right thing some mothers do have problems breast feeding even if they want to breast feed because it is best for baby, some mothers have to use formula,in your case I would recomend formula it seems to keep your baby happy and despite these consultants having degrees I always found mums instinc is always correct there is a bond between you and your baby subcontiously you know what your  baby wants follow your instinc you will not go wrong

Re: breast vs bottle

The foremilk comes first and is made to satisfy thirst. The hindmilk is more satisfyng for hunger and it tends to be sweeter towards the end. That is why you should let your baby feed as long as they want on each side.

Re: breast vs bottle

A baby having too much of the thin milk will cause loose, liquidy nappies in a baby.  The hind milk which is the really thick and satisfying milk is supposed to balance it out.  I am breastfeeding my 5th baby, and the more front (thin milk) she has, the runnier the nappy.  The more thick milk she has, the more like pumpkin soup it is, little lumps included!

A baby not being satisfied on breastmilk comes from them not getting enough of the hind milk, which is heavier and satisfies for longer.
