Babywearing Options

mcm by mcm Young Parent(November 2008) (rank 3rd)

What is babywearing?

Babywearing is exactly that. Wearing your baby with the aid of fabric!

Why wear your baby?

Wearing your baby can be beneficial for you and the baby. Baby feels safe and secure next to you especially near your heart. It can help with bonding

and makes it easier to respond to their needs so they tend to cry less.

There are many options available for babywearing.  I have been researching themself and wish I could try them all!

  • Sturdy padded carriers like the Ergo. i have an Ergo and they are great. I like how the weight is distributed and baby is NOT suspended by the crotch.
  • Mei Tais are a patch of fabric with ties.
  • Pouches usually go over one shoulder. My husband and I both had pouches that were basically a round of t-shirt material.Very compact and easy.
  • Ring slings are made up of a long piece of fabric that is secured with rings.
  • Wraps are very versatile. Basically a long piece of fabric that is wrapped and tied around you and baby. There are many different ways to wrap and carry.

These can be costly but if you can sew you can try making most of these yourself. I actually made a no sew version of a wrap today. Easy and practical. :)

Re: Babywearing Options

I just bought an ergo carrier and absolutely love it. I have used rings sling early on but he has always been such a big bub and i have a bad back so it doesn't work anymore.

Re: Babywearing Options

Thanks for a good run down.  I have seen so many options and it is so very exciting!  It is becoming more and more normal to see mums carrying babies and I think it is great.  I carried both of mine - for me it was easier, I knew they were warm, they were more content and I could do more - it is essential when you have a toddler too, so that you have hands free for your toddler's needs.  Great!
