An activity for Dads and kids

atinnyforme by atinnyforme Crawling(December 2008) (rank 500+)

I have found that a great activity for me and my kids in my spare time is to have a seasonal vege garden. I have enogh room in my back yard so i have a vege patch that me and my son tend to.

Even if youu dont have

a big back yard you could build one in a cork box or somethng like that. I know my son really gets a thrill out of seeing the veges start to grow and is very good witth remembering to water his plants.

He even like to eat the veges raw as he picks them. like beans and tomatoes and things straight from the plants. He comes to me and says Daddy look i growed a tomatoes and stuff like that. We get in and i tell him which ones are weeds and he pulls them out. I bought him his own little gardening set and his great grandmother gave him his own kids sized wheel barrow. He really loves gardening with dad and i love gardening with him. My daughter likes to join in too when shes not at school but she is not as big of a vege eater as she shouuld be so she dosent get into it as much.

He also likes to help mum cook in the kitchen and thinks its great when they cook with his veges and when he has his tomatoes on a snadwhich he says i grow the best tomatoes dont i mum.

This gives us some real quality time together and i feel i am teaching my son something. By next year i dont think ill need to show him which ones are weeds.

Re: An activity for Dads and kids

Oh that is so cute! And what a great idea! A great way to bond, and to encourage children to get out in nature...heaven knows children these days spend waaay too much time indoors with computers and nintendos...also brilliant way to get children to eat more healthily...vegies and fruit...instead of all the sugared up, preservative/colour/flavour pumped crapola you see in shops these days...good work!!!!

Great idea and it is much better than having the kids sitting inside playing video games.  At least they can spend time with dad and know where there food comes from.

Re: An activity for Dads and kids

My daughter loves being outside and she gets a big thrill out of smellling the flowers "with just her nose".  We grew pumpkins last year and it was a real treat to see them all the way through to Halloween when they became Jack-o-lanterns.  We just bought most of our seeds for this year's vegetable garden and plan to start them indoors this weekend.

Re: An activity for Dads and kids

My hubby does this with our kids.  we have a heap of pots near the fence, with strawberries, cherry tomatoes, a couple of potted fruit tress and a few other vegies, depending on the season.  The kids love helping themselves to fresh, healthy food straight from the plants.  And its real quality time that my husband has with the kids outside- potting, watering and picking.  thanks for sharing.
