Night bottle

325janie by 325janie In Nappies(December 2008) (rank 500+)

If your baby is drinking from a bottle at night (whether expressed or formula), you can get a couple of hours more sleep by thickening the bottle with baby cereal. In the old days they used to add some cornflour but I used baby cereal (plain, banana, whatever the baby

likes). The extra thickeness ensures that baby will stay full longer.

Re: Night bottle

This has been proven to cause many belly problems, and is not at all good for your child.  You are replacing imporatant nutrients that their bodies need with a filler such as cereal.

This can also cause early allergies to certain grains.  An infants stomache does not yet at a young age contain the required bacteria in their intestines to break down many of the grains thus causing an initial allergic reation which can develop into a serious problem that isn't outgrown until later in life.

Part of having a baby is having to take care of it, that means getting up a lot.

Re: Night bottle

I have to agree with everyone else, that putting cereal or flour into the bottle to thicken it up, its a chocking hazard and you wont be able to hear  your child chocking if you are asleep yourself. I don't think this is very good advice at all. Sorry

Re: Night bottle

I'm sorry but this practice is so outdated it is no longer reccommended due to, as everyone has pointed out, choking risks.  Even if your baby is over the age of six mths I wouldn't recommend it.  Little babies stomaches can not cope with food at a young age and the given age for feeding babies is now 6mths.

I would highly recommend giveing a dream feed instead.  Put your baby down for his night sleep at what ever time say 7pm then at say 10.30 - 11pm gently lift your baby out of the cot with out waking and give the bottle.  We used to do this and it worked a treat.  baby then slept through until 6.30am.

Re: Night bottle

OMG I can't beleive that this sort of outdated advice is still being given to parents. This is an extremely dangerous practice that has been known to cause choking and also increases the risk of obesity and other illnesses. If cereal has to be given for any reason it should be via a spoon!

Re: Night bottle

1.  What age baby are you talking about?

2.  As Winja mentioned, you are actually creating a choking hazard.

3.  Perhaps if the baby is over 6mths old, you should just feed it the baby cereal normally.

Re: Night bottle

I must admit that I hated the night feeds with my baby, but when he was 3 months old I discovered what we called the dream feed.  He would have his last bottle at 6.30pm and then we would wake him at 10.30pm for another bottle.  I know that people say you should never wake a sleeping baby, but this truly worked for me.  After that bottle he would sleep till about 6.30am.  So mummy actually got some sleep.

Re: Night bottle

you should never put anything in your childs bottle other than normal fluids ie. milk or water, adding things like custard and cereal are choking hazards and can kill babies.
