Reporting and voting on "bad" advice.

DarkenedAngel by DarkenedAngel Talking Back(December 2008) (rank 40th)

Minti has a voting system for advice articles. Minti also has a function that allows members to comment on advice, which allows them to add extra or contradicting information to an article.

If you see an advice article that you believe to be bad advice, that is no reason

alone to report it. If it doesn't actually breach Minti's Terms of Service or Code of Honor, it isn't necessary to report the advice.

If you see an advice article and think the advice is bad advice, vote it as such, and then comment on it giving the contradicting information that you know to show that the advice should not be followed.

Advice that is voted low appears lower in the search engines and suggest that the advice is not recommended. If someone chances apon it, they will see that the comments that follow the advice clearly indicate that the advice is not recommended and probably should not be followed.

I have seen many articles that have been reported for being just bad advice, and yet the comments that followed them were absolutely brilliant, well-written, intelligent, and full of alternative good advice. These comments should not be wasted and should be left to serve as a good example of what to do, while the advice article itself remains an obvious example (by the votes and following comments) of what not to do.

Minti has a clause on EVERY page that reads, "Any contributed content above is the subjective opinion of that member or external author, and not of Minti.com Pty Ltd. If you are searching for health related advice we strongly suggest you seek professional medical support. View our Terms of Service for more details." This alone suggests that people reading articles or anything else on Minti should not just take the information they find as gospel and should research the subject further.

The only time an advice article should be reported is if it is not actually advice in any way at all, is offensive or degrading to anyone, blatent advertising or spam, in breach of copyright laws, or in breach of the Terms of Service or Code of Honor in some other way.

Advice articles that are short enough to just be a comment should be posted as a comment, especially when in response to a question in the Q&A section, so if you are looking at writing an advice, please consider whether it warrents a full article on the subject or if you could post it as a comment instead. Often these articles are reported because members get tired of seeing tiny snippets of advice flooding Minti and getting voted on well, when other members put a lot of effort and research into their articles and receive the same level of votes. These little articles should not be reported either. Again, you do have the option to just vote it lower than the more informative and comprehensive articles that you see on Minti, and that is what you should do.

Not everyone has the ability to write well. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are not as important as getting the information out there to the general public. Just because someone's written literacy level is not particularly good, it doesn't mean that the advice they have to give is going to be poor. These articles should not be reported just because they aren't written and presented well. If the advice within them is good advice to follow and you can understand the point they are trying to make, that is really all that matters.

Advice that is excellent advice to follow, well written, well presented, obviously well researched and/or knowledgeable, comprehensive and informative should be the advice that receives votes of 5. Advice that is bad advice to follow and is strongly not recommended at all should be receiving votes of 1. Everything in between should be scaled between 2 and 4. It is perfectly acceptable to not vote 5 on everything you see and agree with. In fact, it is perfectly acceptable to not vote on an article at all if you can't decide what to score it or don't think it is worth voting on.

Lastly, the vote you give an article should be based on the information contained within the article itself, not the comments that follow, and certainly should not be voted on according to your opinion of the author.

Please consider leaving what you believe to be bad advice on minti and use the system the way it was designed.

Any contributed content above is the subjective opinion of that member or external author, and not of Minti.com Pty Ltd. If you are searching for health related advice we strongly suggest you seek professional medical support. View our Terms of Service for more details.

Awesome, I agree with most of what you have written, though it's not so bad if people report bad advice, as it only brings it up for further discussion and if it is deemed appropriate, it will get voted out of 'the bin'.

Authors also need to remember that if they choose to post an article, they need to be willing to accept any comments about the article.  If someone posts something that other people disagree with, or don't think is valid, or detailed, or well formatted etc.  It isn't a comment about them personally, it is about their article and if they want better feedback, they can choose whether it remains, or is edited themselves.
