NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

winja by winja Talking Back(December 2008) (rank 39th)

Well nappy rash is something most of us deal with at one time or another as parents so I thought id share a few ideas that might help someone.

First of all nappy rash does not make you a bad parent it can be caused by a number of

reasons, yes its most commonly caused by a wet or dirty nappy being left on the baby for too long but that it not the only reason and can happen no matter how careful you are. It can be caused by the introduction of new foods into your baby’s diet or if your baby is sick or teething especially if they get diarrhoea or from giving them acidic things such as orange to eat in large quantities.

My daughter had nappy rash A LOT so I tried lots of different ways to avoid it and to treat it this is because she has sensitive skin and eczema where as my son has only ever suffered nappyrash while teething or when hes sick my daughter was in disposable nappies most of the time where my son is in cloth full time I don’t feel that either cloth or disposable are better than each other when it comes to sensitive skin just how you use them.

CHANGE REGULARLY

change your baby as soon as they are wet or soiled so their skin stays dry and clean. This is most important for cloth users if you need the nappy to last longer then use a booster. At home don’t use covers (if using flats) as often as possible so you know as soon as bub is wet. Plastic covers do not allow air to circulate and also make it hard for you to tell if bub needs a change.

LET THE AIR DO THE WORK

with nappyrash air is your very BEST friend when it comes to treatment or prevention, let you baby go nappy free as often as possible and you will not have as many problems with nappyrash if worried about the carpet  and your baby is not crawling yet lie them on a towel (this also gives them much needed tummytime) if the baby is older take your baby outside to play for an hour or so or pop them in fabric training pants.

 CHUCK THE WIPES

wipes are more often then not smelly because of fragrance and they STING when you use them on broken skin or rashes OUCH! the also can cause problems with babies who suffer eczma or who have sensitive skin and can make nappyrash worse rather than better, use facewashers or cottonwool instead at least when you baby has really bad nappyrash it will heal quicker and be less painful for your baby when you have to wipe if you use warm water on a soft facewasher.

 CHEMICALS

some nappies contain chemicals that will affect your babies skin especially if its sensitive look for a nappy that is gentle on your baby’s skin and if using cloth wash your nappies using as few chemicals as possible, you don’t need them hot water, vinegar and the sun are pretty good things! If you NEED to soak then use detergents for sensitive skin.

CREAMS POTIONS AND POWDERS

First of all DON’T use powders! Nope not ever! Don’t use them ever lol

Theres plenty of creams out there that are popular but I find the best natural type cream is paw paw cream! For very bad nappyrash and for prevention of nappyrash on very sensitive skin use zinc just a warning though it is very hard to get off! Also you can mix bi carb with water or cornflower and air dry and that’s a great home remedy that works too.

Most of these tips will work on both kids with sensitive skin or kids who get nappy rash as a one off but if it doesn’t heal quickly or becomes worse always take your child to a doctor to be checked as sometimes other things may look like nappyrash such as thrush, infection, eczma or allergies and need medical attention and proper medical treatment. Do not self diagnose or treat these without first seeking medical advice.

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

I use this paw paw cream...  I live in Canada and can't get it here..  When visiting Australia, Francis had the worst nappy rash I had ever seen, complete with open little sores. I felt so bad for him (The nappies I brought in Australia did not react well to his butt). Nothing I could do seemed to clear it up.. Then my friend pointed this stuff out to me....  And with in a day it was clearing so fast it was almost non existant....

I am so excited that I found this website because now I can order it here, and my friend who is just about to have a baby, was so excited I found this website too...

Not only is it great for nappy rash, I made my friend rub it into his head when he got sun burned.. He also put in an order for some.. :)

AWESOME STUFF... 10 out of 10.

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

Hey there,

Fantastic advice!!! My cherub had shocking nappy rash from day 1! She was in hospital nappies - cloth - and ended up with such a bad rash they thought she had a nasty infection- staph! After that was ruled out they advised to use disposables and not to even think about using wipes! We used washers ( I bought stacks and washed in hot water with vinegar after soaking- in napisan for pooey ones -I then ran them through an extra rinse to make sure there was no chemical residue before using again! ) I used loo paper to wipe off the worst of the poo then a damp washer to make sure all clean. After a wet nappy, I  just used lots of warm water to rinse away any acidity, then paw-paw to prevent any rash. Any other creams just didn't seem to work. I sold all my brand new cloth nappies on e-bay as I never got to use them! Lots of nappy off time also worked well.We had a big padded change mat and I just chucked a towel over it. Bad nappy rash can get very infected. Thanks again for the great advice, I wish I had know then what you have put in your advice instead of having to go by trial and error!

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

Great advice! I swear by the paw paw cream and letting them run around with no nappy on! Also, if the nappy rash is particulary bad (especially around teething time) I don't use wipes at all. I just pop them in a cool shower, its a lot less painful than getting a red raw butt wiped.

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

Great advice - i use wipes but i make sure it is the best quality unscented ones with no alcohol and they work great.  I am lucky though that my daughter has only really got it when new foods are introduced and she is adjusting to them. LOL

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

When we had our first son (nearly 9 years ago), at the hospital we were given cloths (like chux) that were cut up into fours to use as wipes, just wet them down and they worked really well.  You can also wash them and reuse them a couple of times before they wear out, saving some dollars too.  If you are washing cloth nappies anyway it is not any more work.  I must admit i use wipes now but prefer the unscented types, my son was very sensitive to those wipes and i found the wet cloths didn't irritate his butt.

You can buy cornflour 'talc' now and a little goes a long way, and i agree paw paw ointment is brilliant.  Great for dry lips too, but if you are using it for bums as well you wouldn't want to be double dipping!!!  LOL!

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

Jaydee only got a nappy rash once or twice and it after a quick application of butt cream it was usually gone by the next change... I guess we were just lucky, though he got a lot of 'air time' anyway, (still does the little nudey rudey).  Other people have written about using corn flour in place of powder... I really like your final paragraph, it is VERY sensible advice ; )

Re: NAPPYRASH NIGHTMARE

I swear by burnt flour for my daughters diaper rash.

It's super easy to make... just put a bit of flour into a fry pan and keep stiring it round til it browns. Then add a little bit of water so it's pasty and slap it on! In credibly cheap, and works wonderfully on my daughter, who has sensitive skin.
