Well nappy rash is something most of us deal with at one time or another as parents so I thought id share a few ideas that might help someone.
First of all nappy rash does not make you a bad parent it can be caused by a number of
reasons, yes its most commonly caused by a wet or dirty nappy being left on the baby for too long but that it not the only reason and can happen no matter how careful you are. It can be caused by the introduction of new foods into your baby’s diet or if your baby is sick or teething especially if they get diarrhoea or from giving them acidic things such as orange to eat in large quantities.
My daughter had nappy rash A LOT so I tried lots of different ways to avoid it and to treat it this is because she has sensitive skin and eczema where as my son has only ever suffered nappyrash while teething or when hes sick my daughter was in disposable nappies most of the time where my son is in cloth full time I don’t feel that either cloth or disposable are better than each other when it comes to sensitive skin just how you use them.
CHANGE REGULARLY
change your baby as soon as they are wet or soiled so their skin stays dry and clean. This is most important for cloth users if you need the nappy to last longer then use a booster. At home don’t use covers (if using flats) as often as possible so you know as soon as bub is wet. Plastic covers do not allow air to circulate and also make it hard for you to tell if bub needs a change.
LET THE AIR DO THE WORK
with nappyrash air is your very BEST friend when it comes to treatment or prevention, let you baby go nappy free as often as possible and you will not have as many problems with nappyrash if worried about the carpet and your baby is not crawling yet lie them on a towel (this also gives them much needed tummytime) if the baby is older take your baby outside to play for an hour or so or pop them in fabric training pants.
CHUCK THE WIPES
wipes are more often then not smelly because of fragrance and they STING when you use them on broken skin or rashes OUCH! the also can cause problems with babies who suffer eczma or who have sensitive skin and can make nappyrash worse rather than better, use facewashers or cottonwool instead at least when you baby has really bad nappyrash it will heal quicker and be less painful for your baby when you have to wipe if you use warm water on a soft facewasher.
CHEMICALS
some nappies contain chemicals that will affect your babies skin especially if its sensitive look for a nappy that is gentle on your baby’s skin and if using cloth wash your nappies using as few chemicals as possible, you don’t need them hot water, vinegar and the sun are pretty good things! If you NEED to soak then use detergents for sensitive skin.
CREAMS POTIONS AND POWDERS
First of all DON’T use powders! Nope not ever! Don’t use them ever lol
Theres plenty of creams out there that are popular but I find the best natural type cream is paw paw cream! For very bad nappyrash and for prevention of nappyrash on very sensitive skin use zinc just a warning though it is very hard to get off! Also you can mix bi carb with water or cornflower and air dry and that’s a great home remedy that works too.
Most of these tips will work on both kids with sensitive skin or kids who get nappy rash as a one off but if it doesn’t heal quickly or becomes worse always take your child to a doctor to be checked as sometimes other things may look like nappyrash such as thrush, infection, eczma or allergies and need medical attention and proper medical treatment. Do not self diagnose or treat these without first seeking medical advice.
