Solids for baby!!!

Question:

Any ideas for what to give a 7 month old who HATES (and so refuses) anything mushed up or pureed?  She will only eat from a "block" of food she can hold

(ie the whole banana, or vegie) I have to sit and watch her, waiting for the inevitable gagging, then scoop out the lump and repeat.  But otherwise all she wants is breast!

My Advice:

At 7months old, a baby that young. Cannot usually hold  there own spoon, for the duration of a whold meal. If so, that is great. But, my daughter couldn't.  My daughter would reflux up

till 10months old. It was very frustrating & the inevitable, was always a mess to clean up. If she ate to

quickly, or rushed her bottle, it would then come up. I tryed so many methods, in the end. I realised her

personality of impatience, had to be taught. So, i would have to give her bottle tits with smaller holes,

for her age, because of this problem. I started solids at 5months. I would put her pureed food, like fruit or

veg, in with the milk bottle or trainer cup & mix it up. That, way she didn't know. Was unaware that she was

having solids. The only problem, is you have to find tits with larger holes. I would go for the tits for 6-18mths.

Or, i would cut the tits myself, enough to have a thicker flow through the bottle. Much like a thick milkshake.

Those juice bars in shopping centres, do it for us adults. So, why not for babies. You could try this. Just thought, i would offer some help. Hope, it works. I guess, you can always try & see how you go. Usually, at that age they

love custard. But, as one member said on this blog/. Putting the food in pieces, on baby highchair for picking at it herself. Might work too. At that age, they don't realise taking too much will make them choke. Hope, something works.... All the very best.

You could also make the mushy stuff thicker by adding dry cereal like Cheerios. If you dont mind a mess dump yogurt out om a tray or plate and add bits of banana or crackers. Some of the nice teething biscuits might work to because they dissolve.

Re: Solids for baby!!!

Our wee man had his first solids at 5mths... He suddenly became obsessed with the smell of food and I got some baby rice off a friend of my mums when we were on holiday.  I was stirring the mixture and he yanked the spoon out of my hand and wolfed it down.  We kept to baby rice and mushy weetbix and apple until he was about 6mths old.  After that I generally mashed (I wanted some consistency, not just puree for him), whatever veges we were having and slowly introduced different meats one at a time.  By the time he was about 8mths old, he was grabbing for food off our plates, so he started eating whatever we ate, thai, indian, home made pita pizza's - the works.  If I thought anything was a little spicy for him, or the meal was hot, I just put plain yogurt on it for him to cool it down.  I never really fed him myself unless he was feeling sick and sulky, or we were in a real hurry.  We gave him plenty of finger foods, mainly little fruit pieces, vegetables, crackers, and cheese... He never had any choking problems and always ate under superivision, I never even worried about it, as I made sure that he could chew properly by teaching him even when he was only eating baby rice.

Re: Solids for baby!!!

PS I think you mean teets not tits, the bits that babies suck on when they drink from a bottle.  They can break down if you make holes in them yourself, however most brands come with a variety of sized holes for different age groups.
