New Clothes

nomes by nomes Speaking(August 2006) (rank 309th)

A friend of mine purchased some clothes for her children.  I was horrified when I watched her take the new clothes out of the shopping bag, rip off the tags and put them straight on her children to wear for the day.  I explained to her that all new

clothing should be washed.  She was bemused by my comments and said..."Nah, they'll be right.  The clothes are clean".

In order for clothes to maintain their look and avoid being shop soiled, manufacturers add a chemical finish.  This is also supposed to make the clothes smell better, but I beg to differ on that.  Most swing tags placed on clothing specify that garments need to be washed before being worn for this reason.  Most of us will also notice, upon washing new coloured clothes for the first time, alot of dye is washed out of the garment.  This is another reason as to why we should wash new clothes before wearing them; to help remove excess dye.  If we do not do this, the excess dye can come off onto the skin.

One of the chemicals that is used to protect garments is: Formaldehyde - which helps prevent mildew and is most common for clothing that needs to be transported long distances.  This chemical has been linked to allergies in some people.

With all this being said, we should also wash new clothing because we really don't know where it has been.  Who has tried it on?  What are other people's hygiene habits like?  Think about the possible contamination that can happen through shipping.  What are the storage facilities like in a warehouse or factory?  Do any of these places have insect or vermin problems?

The same principle applies to bed linen and towels.

Re: New Clothes

I had heard this before but my husband doesnt believe. I always wash Caitlins clothes first though just out of habit and to make them nice and soft and to know that I used the sensitive skin wash so not to irritate her skin. But I still have to admit I dont really do it for my own clothes. I am usually to excited to wear them!

Washing new clothes....
I always wash my boys clothes before they wear them. but I have to say when it comes to my clothes I don't, especially jeans or long pants as I tend to waer them around the house for a while to see if they fit properly. As once you've washed them you can't return them......

wow
I am guilty! I usually wash everything first as my son has eczema and some things will set it off but there have been a lot of times where im out and they have soiled or wet the last piece of clothing and I have had to run and buy another set and I just throw them on the kids. Now i will think twice ... thanks for sharing that :)

It's a short term thing...I don't know what the effects would be from just trying on a garment, and I'm not about to speculate, but I still try on garments instore

I always wash my clothes aswell when buy for my daughter or even myself, as you don't know who's wore them before you or who's tried them on etc.

I personally do this to my clothes.

No I've learnt that is a chemical that is used I will take better care of myself next time.

I have a close friend and she does this often to her children.  But I suppose when you are out shopping and there are no more clothes in the nappybag that are clean and you have to purchase something then you have to be a bit lax.

All my baby clothes go in a wash of Lux - pure soap flakes.  This is ment to have less reactions to children.  It is good on woolens as well.

Thanks for the great advice.

Wash New Clothes before you put them on yourself or your baby!
I agree with you on this one! I wash all my children's clothes before the get to wear them. My little baby got a rash from some chemical that was embedded into his pj's from the store or where ever it had been! This is good advice!!!

New Clothes, I agree

I agree also. I always washed anything new that I had gotten from a store. Even if it was giving to me from anyone else, I would wash it again. So that I know it's clean.

When i bought the baby clothes, I took the tag's off, put it in the clothes basket and put them straight in the washer so that they could be cleaned.

Good advice

New Clothes

Yes I agree,  they have been through such a process to get to the shops, and not to mention with adults clothes all the people that have tried them on before you buy them.  On most tags it says wash before use.

Good practice to wash new clothes.

It is also recommended that new clothes be washed for newborns to avoid allergic reactions. This is especially more important for babies born of parents who have a history of asthma and skin problems.

I didn't know for a fact that there's chemicals on new clothes though, but this makes sense. Everything is about appearance nowadays so it makes sense that clothes would have more extra dye to enhance the look. I mean, if they put wax and stuff on fruits and veggies to make them shiny and look appetizing, why not clothes? Great advice!

Even this guy...
.... washes his new clothes before wearing them :)  Gotta agree that it just makes sense, even if there is not "major" medical issues it's not a big effort to pop the stuff in the wash first :)

and once i remember watching an epsiode of House- this kid bought some counterfeit jeans out of the back of a truck- the truck hada pesticide on the floor and his skin absorbed that pesticide and nearly died  not if i can help it thanks!

Definitely wash before wear.

Would you wear undies before you wash them?

When I was pregnant with my first child, a lady in our antenatal classes worked in a factory/warehouse preparing and packing clothes to be sent to the department stores.  The topic came up in class whether to wash newly bought clothes or not. Most people said every so often is ok, some said that if they needed they new garment straight away, they iron it to kill any nasties. The women who worked at the factory stood up and said NO WAY. She continued by letting us know what the garments go through to be shop ready ,the multimple of chemicals used. Pretty scary!!! And that was the last port of call, who knows what happened in transit to the factory, in manufacturing the garments, in manufacturing the material to make the garments etc. etc.

If we really like the new garment look, wash in cold water and then get the iron out........which happens to be my enemy so we go with the grunge look. I would not take the unneccessary health risks, especially when there are so many health risks out there that we don't have control over.  Great article Nomes. Thanks

I Do that too just rip off the tags and chuck them on. i feel washing them wrecks the new look about them especially if you buy an outfit to be worn that week or that day even.Ive never had a problem with it and my children are 4,9,10 and 11.Is it medically proven that wearing clothes un washed will cause skin irritations???just intersted

Ok, well...I'm not going to go into all the possible side effects of inhaling, contacting and ingesting pesticides, dyes and formaldehyde but please check the link I included in the article, which discusses formaldehyde  http://www.epa.gov/iaq/formalde.html.  You can do your own research on pesticides and dyes....lots to choose from there.

Not knowing who's touched, sneezed or coughed my clothes or what animal has nested in them in the ship on the way over is enough for me to wash before I wear.  And smelling the ones that come out of the packets....well, it just doesn't smell healthy.  I'm glad your kids haven't suffered skin irritations.

Finally someone agree with me!
I always wash any  new clothings, linen, towel before I use them. Sometimes my hubby didn't listen to me. I'm happy that finally someone agree with me! Thanks Nomes.
