Steriods for early babies

Re: almost 30 weeks and just put on steroids

Question:

I've been to see my OB today and he has now put me on weekly injections of steroids as he is trying to mature bub's lungs i am just wondering if anyone else

has had this and if their baby was born early because of this??

thanks in advance...

My Advice:

This is something that is done as a precationary measure when it looks like your going to have a pre-term baby. I have had steriods with 3 of my 4 children only my first was born significantly early at 31/5. I was in & out of hospital for bed rest before she was born & without the steriods for her lungs I am sure she would have been in the neo natal ward for far longer.  Even though she was born weighing 1.5kgs she only had breathing apparatise for one day, then a humidicrib with extra oxygen for another week.   I took her home after only 4 weeks in hospital (a month before she was even supposed to be born).

My third I had steriods to help his lungs,he was born by elective c-section a little over three weeks early & he had no problems breathing & my last I also had steriods with no problems.

So your concern about the steriods causing a early labour you shouldn't worry. It's just your baby may have other ideas about when its going to be born & this is why you have been put on them.  The best thing is to try not to worry too much (which I know isn't always easy to do) get as much rest as you can & know that the steroids should help what ever the out come, if your baby come next weeks or in 10 weeks..

Good luck & enjoy your baby when they arrive...

Re: Steriods for early babies

I became very ill at 33 weeks and had to have two steroid injections 24 hours apart to help develop my daughters lungs before she was born prematurely at 33.5 weeks via emergency caesarean.  Because of this although she came out at 1.5kgs she required only 4 hours of breathing assistance and was able to come home at 4 weeks instead of the anticipated 7-8 weeks.  I would try not to worry yourself too much - they are to help your bubs grow big and strong.  I just pity you for the pain of those horrible needles - they are excrutiating LOL (At least it goes away quick enough).  Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy and try to rest up and not stress too much.
