A Parent's Guide to Natural Supplements for ADHD

LauraRamirez by LauraRamirez In Nappies(December 2008) (rank 500+)

Due to the marketing efforts of big pharmaceutical companies, many parents are unaware that natural supplements for ADHD have been proven to work as effectively as ADHD drugs at suppressing the symptoms of ADHD. However, some natural remedies are more effective than others. In this article you'll learn what makes

for a good supplement, so you can find the best natural treatment for your child.

What to Look for in Effective Natural Supplements for ADHD

Since some supplements are better quality than others, do your research. Here are some of the most important things to look for in a quality supplement:

  • Has the manufacturer been in business for at least two years? Do they maintain strict standards when manufacturing their products? Are their products manufactured under the supervision of a pharmacist and do they follow the guidelines of the Homeopathy Pharmacoepia? If so, this will be stated in their literature and on their web site.

  • Do the natural supplements for ADHD contain the best ingredients that have been shown to suppress the symptoms of Attention Deficit and heal them with regular use over time? These ingredients include botanical extracts that soothe agitation, reduce hyperactivity and increase focus. If used properly, they are incredibly effective. (Case in point: the transformation of my nephew, who used to take ADHD drugs and suffer from the side effects. For the past two years, he's been taking natural supplements and his symptoms have all but disappeared.)  Look for proven ingredients such as arsen iod, turberculinum, hyocyamus and verta alb.

  • Does the company web site feature unsolicited testimonials from parents whose children have successfully used their products to better their lives? Does the company show their confidence in their product by offering an unconditional guarantee. This means that if you buy a natural supplement for ADHD and are unhappy with it for any reason, you should be able to return it, no questions asked.

While natural supplements for ADHD have been shown to reduce symptoms and are safe (unlike drugs which have short and long term side effects), a few companies with poor practices have made it necessary for you to do your research before purchasing a supplement to treat your child. Since natural remedies actually restore proper brain function with continued use over time, taking the time to do some research is well worth the effort.

Once you start your child on a quality natural supplement for ADHD, your child's behavior and focus will improve and he will begin to blossom in ways that make you proud. Best of all, you will be confident that you're giving him the nutrients his brain needs to heal and function optimally, without the worry of short and long term side effects. No matter how you look at it, it's a win-win situation.

Re: A Parent's Guide to Natural Supplements for ADHD

I think this is a great article. Thank you for sharing it with us. Far to many children are being drugged by their families and doctors needlessly. Behavioural  disrders do exist in a few and they do need to be treated when they are properly diagnosed, Not just diagnosed so doctors and pharmaciutical companies can make more money.

Natural Remedies for me would always be the first choice and your article has some great links and wonderful advice.

While I agree with natural alternatives for treating these children there are other things to consider before taking them. Many supplements contain herbs or fish oils and some people become much worse while taking them as they are unknowingly intolerant to these ingredients.

Using a diet recommended by leading allergists such as the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney will ensure children who trully have this disorder are able to be treated with tolerated products and those who never had it to begin with are free of the symptoms as long as they avoid their triggers.
