Being organised for the working week and keep the household running smooth

sandra106 by sandra106 Walking(December 2008) (rank 271st)

I have a husband working full time and two teenagers working full time aswell as a daughter at school. Gone are the days of monday morning and the three men are searching the house for the mysterious lost socks and where did I leave my boots saga. On sunday night

I make sure they have enough clothes ready for the working week all ironed for hubby and daughter and folded for the boys ready to go. I have a table set up in the laundry all clothes are folded and put into their own piles complete with socks and jocks for the week.

I found this so much easier than putting them in their draws. As the boys have 5 o'clock starts there is nothing worse than searching for items this time of the morning half asleep and then getting stressed out because they think they are going to be late for work as it slows them down. They have to however make sure all their clothes are put in laundry ready for me to wash. If there not then they have to wash them their selves.

When I do the grocery shopping I plan out the whole week so I know what I am going to cook for meals aswell as there work and school lunches. Sunday nights I might bake 2 chooks so if I make curried chicken with one for tea and the other chook is for lunches for 2 days for sandwhiches and then I will make chicken and pasta for the second day.

Also buy a large roast enough for a meal for tea and the leftovers get used for sandwhiches or a meal with salad for the next 2 days.

Then the last day of the week I will send to work with ham and cheese sandwhiches and they toast them at work.

I always bake a large batch of biscuits and a 2 cakes through the week and that does them for the week aswell. Sometimes I make scones or pikelets for something different.

I Always buy plenty of fruit on sunday enough for the whole working and school week. I have found if you do these things the whole week runs alot more smoothly and they are also not wasting their money on takeaway food.

An organised house is much easier then everyone getting frustrated because they can't find their clothes or the stress of what am I going to have for lunch because I don't have enough money. As my sons are both apprentices they don't earn alot and they have car payments and insurance so they usually don't have alot of money to spare and to buy a meal for lunch these days is around $8.00 and some times more and that soon adds up after a week at work.

Also would like to say I am not one of those mothers that does everything for my children they are not waited on hand and foot this is just my plan for the working week  mainly because the boys work 12 hour shifts they are up at 5.00am leave home at 5.30 am and are home at 6.30pm so it is a very tiring week. On the weekends they help out by mowing lawns, washing cars, mustering cattle, ironing their own clothes if they are going out ,the boys drive their sister to and from friends houses, get the groceries when I don't have time, cook their own meals, arrange their own baking affairs they are very capable young people who will manage very well when they leave home.

Re: Being organised for the working week and keep the household running smooth

Good advice for those who have the time. My man and i both also work, but because of my job working both day and night and only having sundays off, i generally dont have time to cook or clean like this. My man does the washing and ironing and puts his clothes away. I think that to have your household run successfully you all need to work together to keep it clean and organised. If it was left up to me to do all the cooking and washing and general cleaning, there would be no food or clean clothes most days.

I agree with Lui, when my man and i moved in together, his mother had done everything for him, and he expected the same from me. It was very frustrating for me, and it has taken nearly 3 years for him to get that he has to do some things for himself. I dont mind cooking and cleaning for him, but if he wants me working and bringing in an income aswell, then he has to do his fair share.

Re: Being organised for the working week and keep the household running smooth

Yes I believe it is vey hard if you are both working this is just what works for our family I have also edited my story and added some more information if you would like to read it. My kids are not waited on hand and foot they are very capable young people They help out on weekends, with mowing, washing cars, cooking their own meals, ironing their going out clothes, getting the groceries if I don't have time, driving their sister to and from friends houses, mustering cattle, it is because they are on 12 hour shifts during the week that I have this plan in place. I grew up in a house with 2 brothers and mum done everything for them and that was not going to happen when I had kids.

Re: Being organised for the working week and keep the household running smooth

I think part of growing up is learning to be organised and look after yourself... They should be participating in the household and doing their own laundry, preparing their own lunches and all of that.  They are going to find it tough when they leave home if not finding a sock stresses them out.

The boys in this household, (except my son) are spoiled in this manner too, as the partner of someone who has everything done for him by his mother, I can say first hand it is a pain in the butt and there is no reason for it.

Re: Being organised for the working week and keep the household running smooth

Not everything is done for them I don't wait on them hand and foot as they work 12 hour shifts it just works easier this way for our household on the weekends is when they help out mowing lawns, washing cars, helping with cattle and even getting the groceries if I don't have time. They all no how to cook and manage their own banking affairs, iron their own clothes of a weekend, drive their sister to and from friends houses they are very capable young people. It is just when they work  those 12 hour shifts it is very tiring and this is the plan I came up with. My 18 year old  is fantastic cook and will cook a meal for the whole family maybe he should have been a chef instead of a diesel fitter. I remember my mum doing everything for my brothers when we were growing up so there is no way I was going to do that.

Re: Being organised for the working week and keep the household running smooth

Aha, so you do have a balance!  I misunderstood it a little, sorry... We all work here and (I am probably going to get shot if anyone reads this), the boys mum works the longest hours and she still does all the things you described.  It does my head in as it kind of reminds me of those old 50's pictures and books that go around like the good wives guide.  I hope they appreciate the effort you make for them and realise that not many girls 'out there' are going to match their mum ; )

Imagine being around in those days!

Absolutely, I'd be an old spinster as there is no way I'd pass as a wife.
