Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

tassiebiarch by tassiebiarch Talking(December 2008) (rank 168th)

What is this world coming to.Where are our Australian doctors, we read kids leaving school to study medicine but when they finish the dont stick around, the question is why? Is it the goverment not offering them good $$$$ than overseas, then if thats the case why do we get

the foreign doctors over here. Just dosn't make sense.

I have had my fare share with foreign and Australian doctors and my personal opinion, and i am not racist, Australian doctors are so much better. You go into an australian doctor they tell you whats wrong or send you for tests, the foreign doctors have to look on the computer for a diagnosis or there medical book.  i have 4 cases i want to  share with you 3 foreign 1 Australian.

1St..... When i was pregnant with my second child i was referred to a gyno(foreign) as my doc had discovered cin 3 on my cervix, The gyno told me that i was to terminate my pregnancy as the cancer cells could form in to full blown cancer by the time my child was born, bawling my eyes out i said no to the termination. As we were heading home mum said lets get a second opinion and we did, this Australian gyno proceeded to tell me that the cin 3 will not spread or grow that my baby will be fine and i and i will not have to have a termination. I had a healthy 8 pound 9,  had a papsmear all still the same as it was when i was 6 weeks pregnant.

2nd...........Took my son to the doc as he had school sores(foreign) as we entered i said to her my son has school sores what do i have to do. She got her medical book out and was trying to find s for school sores, she couldnt find it, um hello we all no they are not called school sores its actually called Impetigo!!!! she had to walk out of the room and ask where in her medical book school sores were. I walked out annoyed that a doc did not know school sores.

3RD.......Went and had a papsmear  4 mths ago with another foreign doctor, i lay there legs in air for atleast 15 mins, he then turned around to me and asked if i had a operation i am like no why? he then said are you sure(um yeah i reckon) i cannot find your cervix. I am like no i am pretty sure she is still in there. it took him 20 minutes to clamp open my cervix. This doctor is still my doctor as i cant get into another one as all the doctors books here in NW coast of Tasmania are closed.

4TH..... The best Doctor/Gyno Man i have ever ever come acoss and dealt with, 9 weeks ago i had a hysterectomy and a bad one at that i had a vag(trying not to get reported) hysto first then ended up having a abdo after as i had enternal bleeding. This man was so comforting, he visited me 3 times a day just to check on me. He even came in sick to say goodbye to me on the day i left. I could go on about this doctor all day. His name is Dr Rattray from Adelaide he comes to tassie every 2 weeks to consult and he is Australian.

I just want to know where are these Australian Doctors are hiding, What are our government doing to help our Australian doctors to stay. At the doctors surgery where i go we have 13 doctors out of them we have 3 australian 1 born and bread and the other 2 from ireland and have been here for 40 years.

As i said i am not racist at all far from it but when it comes to my Health I would like an australian Doctor, The foreign doctors have been raised here are fine its the Doctors that get flown to Australia from there country and practise straight away, i am sick of say pardon what did you say etc.. How many clinical procedures have gone wrong by these doctors have a look on the net and look at the doctors who are in trouble and have a look where they are from..

I wanted to write this as i am thinking about my kids HEALTH  and there kids, as our Nation Will have no Australian doctors.

My advice would be if a foreign doctor does not speak  english very well than ask for a staff member to come and translate for you, in in my cases complain to the surgery/hospital. If you find  that the doctors arn't doing what they are suppose to or arn't  giving you the tests that you want done than complain we need to speak up and complain about these doctors they are only here for the money thats it. See our biggest problem is our $$$$$ low income for australian(better overseas) doctors but fantastic $$$$ for foreign doctors. Us Australians need to start writing to medical boards/governments etc.. to complain and encourage our doctors to stay and have an insentive to make our up and coming doctors stay in Australia.

Its so hard to give more advice as everycase is different and everyones opinion is different, its just i have dealt and spoken to so many people that complain about these doctors but no one including me(until the other week) have done anything about it. As i said above its only going to get worse.

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

very well written, when I was pregg with Katelyn I had some really weird pains early on, I was taken to the hospital and after 10 minutes of talking to the doc I left the room to ask the nurse to get me another doc, he couldnt even understand "sorry can you please repeat that"

once another doc came in he checked me over and I was fine to go hom, lucky for me is was nothing to worry about.

one of my friends also had her baby in the same hospital and her labour and delivery were so bad she needed surgry to reconstruct her bits and pieces!! once again the doctor was not aussie and couldnt speak any english.

I'm not agenst all foreign doctors, I just feel they need to learn english before they try to service the ill of australia

just my opinion.

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

I do understand what you mean.  I've had my fair share of foreign doctors that have not really known what they are on about.  Probably the funniest was me walking into this doctors surgery to ask for a pregnancy check up. He took one look at me and said ýou aren't pregnant, but you do need to do something about your weight!!!!'Um, I was 8 months pregnant and huge!!!!  Not only that, but bubs was giving a good rib tickling that even the receptionist had seen!!!  Then there was one doc at the Gold Coast Hospital (foreign) who wanted to send me home when I could barley sit up!!! I had severe and persistant morning sickness and he wanted to send me home even though my blood pressure was severly low, I was dehydrated to the point it could have caused major organ damage and I couldn't even sit let alone stand!  Thankfully, the ob came down and said I was staying!  Another classic would be about 10 years ago, I went to this doc (on the recommendation of a teacher!) with a bladder infection.  This guy told me I only needed to keep my knees together to strengthen my thigh muscles!  Yup, 3 days later, I was at a different doctors surgery barely able to walk and peeing green mixed with blood!!!  Oh, and the teacher in the end said that she forgot the 'quack'was a bit touchy feely.

Having said all that, the doctor I had with my first pregnancy was amazing!  He was a foreign doctor, but he was fabulous!  He knew his stuff and took care of me like I was the Queen! (might have had something to do with the fact he didn't often deal with pregnant women- the area was a retirees haven!).  He really took the time to explain everything to me, and I mean everything right down to those embarrasing details that make you squirm! lol.  He is the reason why I am able to provide a lot of knowledge to others that most doctors won't tell patients.

Oh, and for the record, the gp I have now, he's from South Africa and is an amazing doctor as well.  Only problem, it can take a month to get in to see him!

I can't believe how stupid the system is down in Tassie.  Come to queensland! lol.  You don't have to register with a particular doctor at all.

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

I think maybe it is being marked down as there is not much "parenting" advice here, though there is "advice" it is not purely parenting.  I think as parents we need to ask lots of questions, we need to find medical staff we can relate to and who understand us and our needs and who are clear to communicate with us - especially where our children are concerned.  I too would be concerned at a doctor who had to look up their medical textbook to diagnose.  I understand how you feel, but I just want to add that this applies to all doctors - not just those who are from overseas - and if you are not happy with someone be vocal (not rude) and ask for a second opinion.  I have had some brilliant doctors (including foreign doctors - especially the obstetrician who delivered my daughter) and some pretty ordinary ones - and nationality was not the only factor.  Thanks for an interesting debate!

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

I had many problems finding a good GP for many years, then in 2003 I found a wonderful wonderful male GP who I have been seeing ever since. He has seen me through my last pregnancy and will be supporting me through this one. He always has something to try when no-one else has a clue what is going on, and (this is the unbelieveable part!!!) if he feels something has gone beyond his scope he refers me to a specialist who will be able to help me immediately. No professional jealousy, he's aware of his limitations and knows the best people to help with whatever I've thrown at him. Personally I think he should get a squillion $$$ for what he does but I'm pretty sure he only gets paid around what I earn- yes, a good wage but for Pete's sake, I don't save lives for a living!!

Lucky for me and others he obviously isn't in it for the money. Don't know what I'd do without him.

Moral of the story- if you find a great GP stick to them like glue!

Ditto, it is obvious that there has been a lot of time put into this article, how about offering some sort of constructive criticism if you don't think it is up to par?

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

Tassie you have written this well and you bring up a fairly valid point... There is a huge shortage of doctors in general in rural areas regardless of their country of origin.  I think this is ranking lower than it should because you need to add some advice.  How do you think it could be rectified?  What precautions (if any), should people take when dealing with Doctors from other countries?  How can communities get together to encourage better medical staff to their area?  Get thinking I am sure you can add some really good tips and ideas to this to bring the ranking up to match your writing skills.

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

I actually think the quality of doctors foreign or not has left ahellavalot to be desired.

I worry that an emergency arises do I risk it and go to the hospital and try my luck?

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

The good Aussie docs dont work at hospitals anymore on a roatating roster its all medical students and ones first year out of uni. or flown straight from another country into our system.

My cousin is first year out of uni(registra if that how you spell it) and she has had some fantastic offers over seas and some ok ones in australia. I just hope we can keep her here.

Re: Where are our Australian Doctors Gone????????

I hear what you are saying, however you cannot apply this thinking to all foreign doctors as some are fantastic.  When i had my daughter under emergency conditions with which i experienced severe complications as a result of pre eclampsia, i didnt have a choice of which doctors i had for my care, and yes most of them were foreign.  And i have to disagree with you as they were mainly foreign and i could not fault them for their knowledge and professionalism.  I do however have my own personal doctor who is a female Australian who i have selected as my family physician as she is who i feel most comfortable with and if she was from another country this would not change my mind.  I think a doctor is a personal choice and it is very important to seek out one that you trust and feel relaxed with - and that may be one from overseas.  Maybe the bad experiences you have had are not necessarily the doctors fault but the practices themselves for the quality of their selection criteria for staff.  If you are not happy maybe you should speak up to the leading physicians at these clinics and maybe the quality of their service can be more closely monitored. I hope you find a doctor that you are happy with.
