When to start brushing teeth

beekay1 by beekay1 Crawling(December 2008) (rank 500+)

It was a question i needed to know the answer to - my daughter now has teeth and how horrible would it be if they decayed because i started too late!  I asked my sister in law first to see when she introduced this daily practice into her daughters routine

and she said when she was 3 (her teeth were well developed by then and she had all her baby teeth).  I took this advice on board however i wanted to do a bit more research as i didn't feel comfortable waiting that long.

So i called my dentist.  Here is the advice he gave :

  • As soon as they get teeth introduce a baby brush and once bubs is used to this (it might take a few weeks) add childrens toothpaste and brush twice daily.
  • Try to minimise sugary food and drinks and encourage them to drink water (It is better for them too)
  • Visit the dentist by the time he/she turns one (or later if they have no teeth yet)

I hope this has helped new time mums out there who had no idea like me - it really isn't something you hear other parents talk about.  There was a lesson learned too as in it always helps to get a second opinion on things.

Re: When to start brushing teeth

When you bathe bubs, use a soft cloth with water to gently wash their gums, right from the beginning.  This will get your baby used to you cleaning in their mouth.  When they start to get teeth, it is even more important, as you can get in with that baby gel and check their teeth without getting clamped down on too much.

After about 6mths start using a very soft age specific brush and as Juzzy mentioned from about 1yr onwards, use an age specific toothpaste.  Always clean your baby's gums/teeth before they go down at night and for naps, it is a good habit to have from the start.  Never let them go to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, as this can rot their teeth, especially their lower teeth as they don't always swallow everything and a little may lay under their tongue behind their teeth.  (This can also be a choking hazard right up to toddler age).

Re: When to start brushing teeth

I was told to start brushing my childrens teeth as soon as they got theirfirst tooth. I was also told not to introduce toothpaste until the child was over 1 and then only use childrens toothpaste as it doesn't matter if they swollow it. Just use water on the brush until they are over one.
