Dummy or Not??

beekay1 by beekay1 Crawling(December 2008) (rank 500+)

I think at some point every parent asks themselves this question.  I opted not to try a dummy until i had fully established breast feeding which was a good 6 weeks.  When i did offer it to my daughter (and i tried several times) she just didn't want it.

I could accept this but was totally amazed at the reaction of so many other parents i knew who thought i was mad.  What was i supposed to do force it upon her knowing she would refuse and gag?  I couldn't do that to her.  She was quite content to pacify herself with her thumb and although this may be a harder habit to break later on i was happy to go with it.

Anyway, nearly 10 months down the track as i began to wean my daughter from breast feeding i thought i would attempt to give her a dummy again as a form of comfort for her.  She took it and it has helped aid the process of taking her off the breast and placing her on the bottle.  We now only have one more feed to delete and the process is complete and the further along we go the more she uses it.

For all mums out there who are not sure i hope my article has helped.  I think it is best to follow your own instincts and listen to your childrens needs, regardless of what others think or do with their children.

Re: Dummy or Not??

I had my first baby take to a dummy easily, My second was a thumb sucker form the moment she was born and I thought it was really cute so I didn't worry about a dummy.... Her front baby teeth have come down a little crockered and have stopped growing at different levels and this is because of the thumb sucking that I thought was so cute.

My third was born a thumb sucker too and I did everything in my power to get her to take the dummy and it was well worth the effort to protect her beautiful teeth...... thumb sucking is very hard to make them give up because it is attached to the hand that is always with them.... I sucked my thumb till I was 12 and my adult teeth are crockered and I feel awful that I have subjected my gorgeous little middle girl to very possibily the same problem....

your article was great

I agree, I gave my son a dummy from birth and he loved it.  When he started teething a 3 months, he was happy to suck on his fingers and has now given the dummy the spit.
