Fussy Eaters

mcm by mcm Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 4th)
If your child is a fussy eater it can be stressful. I think its important to stay calm and not make dinner time a battle of wills.

  • Set a good example - Eat and enjoy healthy foods
  • Remember young children have small stomachs
  • Children like
routine - make meal times regular and serve familiar dishes
  • Bribes don't tend to work, it may even cause the child to dislike the food
  • Juice, milk and cordial can fill them up too much
  • Encourage your child to be involved in preparation and serving of the food
  • If your child doesn't like a certain food, offer a suitable substitute eg. don't like milk, give cheese or don't like vegees, offer fruit
  • If your child is unwell, this may interfere with eating
  • Continue to offer new foods - it can take 10 tries before a child will accept a new food
  • Some children are slow eaters, they eat albeit slowly
When my children don't eat their dinner, I put it away and they can have it when they will be inevitably hungry later.

Later in life
Eating habits started in childhood affect our habits in later life.  Setting good examples now, eating 'proper' amounts and not pigging out, a balanced and varied diet will all be things that your child will remember when they are caring for their own home.
Great Advice

This is also good! I am glad liam is a good eater- loves his food. my brother was fussy. refused anything dairy for some reason. so i completely took it out of his diet for a month- i didnt offer him any of the stuff he was refusing- then when i offerd it again he wanted it and now is the biggest fan of sliced cheese i have ever met. in fact, i have to buy a bulk pack everytime i learn he is coming fora visit.
