how to react to a friends miscarriage

Re: How do I react to a friends miscarriage?
anonymous

Question:

What is the best thing to say to someone who has lost a pregnancy? I heard people don't like being told "I'm sorry" and thats all I can think of saying. My

friend told me prior to the miscarriage that if she lost the baby, she didn't want everyone feeling sorry for her but what do I say? I can't just not reply.......

My Advice:

As some-one who has also lived through a miscarriage the last thing you want to hear is those words "I'm sorry" the most important thing for me was knowing that my friends were there to support me when I needed them knowing I could talk to them about how I was feeling was important . It is also important to not be judgemental as we all react to situations differently just let her know that you are there for her when ever she needs you and mean it!

Excuse my ignorance, but why is saying "I'm sorry" so horrible?  I can understand why saying "It'll be ok", "I know how you feel", and "at least you can get pregnant again" are just downright insensitive and deserve a slap in the face, but I don't understand why sharing in the sorrow is so bad?  If you can't say "I'm sorry", what can you say?  My sister recently lost a baby, and at first I was lost for words, but when I did finally speak, and shared that I was in fact sorry that it had happened, she didn't seem insulted or hurt.  She's my sister, and we're allowed, and are supposed to share in each others' joys and sorrows.

Re: how to react to a friends miscarriage

Hi there, I have had three miscarraiges and I agree that is always the last words you want to hear. There is also the words "It'll be o.k.  and I know how you feel. Even if they have had a miscarriage no 2 people react the same. You have your own circumstances and way of dealing with it. Just let them know you are there for them whether it is a shoulder to cry on,, a buddy to get drunk with or cup of coffee. Take in a funny movie. Don't avoid the subject but don't dwell on it. Just be up front and ask what she would like from you and I am sure she will be only to happy to let you know. That's what good friends are for. Good Luck

Kath
