Re: early start?
Asked by tweezas

Question:

hello my little girl is turning one soon and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what things i could do so my child can enjoy starting to read and things like that we

read alot but she doesn't seem that interested what can i do to get her interested if there is thank you i just want to give her a good start

My Advice:

Hi tweezas!!

Looks like you've already gotten the advice I'd give from others... just a few pages of big colourful pictures, tactile bits (furry/fluffy/rough) and opening flaps are all gold... and it sounds like you are doing all the right things now! (you may just need to lower the expectations for response or length of time you can focus on this for the stage??... don't want to put her off!)

, so, nothing new to say really, but I'll add an underline anyway: at this point it's not about words on the page, but the book being part of a story or interesting discovery -- so lots of funny noises, dramatic pauses and intrigue..."what' might be on the next page? Maybe we shouldn't look!?!" -- i.e., ham it up and have fun! A couple of minutes at this stage is a great start!!!

Even the story-time without a book (make up one... so it's interactive!) is a precursor to them wanting to read later.

A book of real stories (not tactile, not for them to handle themselves, but one for mum or dad to read to them) that all 3 of mine loved at this age was a Ladybird edition very simply called "Story time for 1 year olds" -- that's a few years back, of course, but I imagine they'd still be in print (and I enjoyed the stories, too, which is really important!)

Remember, it's about you and your daughter enjoying the moment and connection together (not too much about getting her started early so she can get great grades in school later on!!) The focus will change YOUR enjoyment levels, and probably make it a lot more attractive and enjoyable for her.

Oh, and one more thing... let her see YOU and your partner reading (for yourselves) every now and then!

All the best... and ENJOY!
