Question:

hi there,

i am after some healthy and interesting food ideas for my kids kindy lunch boxes.  all ideas welcome.

My Advice:

Hi,

Here

are a few things that I have tried for both my son and my husband.

1. Sliced apples put into a ziplock bag with a small plastic container with peanut butter and syrup mixted together as a dip.

2. Carrots seasoned with salt either cut up or buy the baby carrots.  My family loves them cold by themselves, but you could add a great dip or either peanut butter, or salad dressing.

3. Make a lunchable type of lunch box.  Cut up lunch meat and cheese and put in some crackers.  Add some fruit and veggies as well.  Turkey peperoni works great here.

4. Cupcakes with the frosting inside work real well.  Just put a hole in the top of the cupcake and squeeze in the frosting.  You can use a plastic bag as a frosting pouch.  Just put the frosting into the bag and then cut off one corner.  Squeeze where you want it.

With the frosting on the inside you can put cupcakes into any container with less mess.

5. Shape your sandwiches.  Give your sandwiches a new shape.  Cut them in half into triangles or rectagles.  Cut them into 4ths or really get creative and use your cookie cutters.

6. Put sandwich halves in seperate baggies.  This keeps half the sandwich from being wasted when he doesn't finish the sandwich.  Now he is willing to eat it as a snack because it is not "hard".

7. Grapes are perfect.  Bite sized and sweet.

8. Celery sticks can also be used just like the carrots.

9. Buy cheese sticks or just buy the block and cut it up.  Cube it slice it , make triangles and squares.  Shapes have a funny way of being eaten faster.

10. Bananas work great if they will eat the whole thing.  If not use the banana savers at Wal Mart.  If the leave half of a banana in there it can take a while to get the old banana smell out.  Baking soda helps.

11. You can send crackers instead of chips or even triscuits.

I hope this is helpful.

Re: Easy Healthy Lunch Ideas

Some great ideas, though I am dubious about the syrup and peanut butter dip.  Many kids are allergic to peanut butter and kids often share, so it's not something I'd pack off in a school lunch.  Syrup is very sugary and unless they are cleaning their teeth at school, it will stick to their teeth and gums.  I am not sure about why you would need to season carrots with salt either, plain ones are just fine.  Cupcakes, frosting; how about something like fruit muffins as a healthy alternative instead?  Individually wrapped sandwhiches and interesting shapes are a great idea though, as well as crackers cheese.

I will definatly try some of these and the idea of wrapping up the two halves of the sandwich is great for the fussy eater (perfect for my Miss 9 who has been known to throw out her sandwich or hide it-yuk!!)

sum good idea, altho not all really healthy the peanutbutter syrup dip could be replaced with something more healthy like salsa or hummus.
