Potty training: story time!

dtoombs by dtoombs Crawling(January 2009) (rank 500+)

My daughter potty trained early, but the difficulty in the beginning was getting her to sit on the potty for long enough to have a success. I really wanted her to succeed by 'performing' in the potty, even if she only managed to produce a small amount, so that she

could see what it was all about. She was ready for it, being at the stage when she would tell me she had something in her nappy. But when put on the potty she would stay there a few seconds & jump up again, with the potty clean as a whistle.

So I started making potty time story time. We had a couple of stories that were her favourites, & kept these near the potty. She would sit on the potty & I would read. I got so sick of the little duck who loved the rain, & birthday bear! In the end, I think I must have known those stories by heart. Anyway, eventually she managed to produce what she was there to produce, & we made a big fuss of it, & that was the big turning point.

I'm sure others of you have probably found similar methods to make kids persist on the potty, maybe even the same method. It takes patience, but it did work for me!

Stuck in the potty-training trenches? Read Nadine's hilarious blog about battling this bathroom war (watch videos, and participate in discussions too!): http://sweetmama.ca/national/sponsored/page/1/

Re: Potty training: story time!

What an intriguing idea!

I have not had any trouble toilet training my other two.

Malachi liked to make bubbles from day dot (and if he was not ever able to achieve his goal we were informed that 'my penis is broken and needs batteries!'

Imagine hearing that out of the blue when your drinking hot coffee! Not a pretty sight.

Hadassah just recons she's a big girl now and when ever she need s to use the toilet (which is usually quite suddenly) she'll pull her pants down around her ankles and tear off to the toilet yelling 'I need to do weeeeeee!"

Its hella funny!

But I am definitly taking your suggestion an beard for when Phebe reaches that age!!

This is the first time I've heard of this idea. Great one!  What if the potty time story is about pottying? That is, if the book is good enough to hold attention.
