When do I start Potty training?

Re: toilet training
Asked by yvettenzach

Question:

How will I know If my baby is ready to be toilet trained? What age should I start toilet training him?

My Advice:

Hi,

I do believe

that it is a personal decision. Some think that you should start as soon as they begin to crawl and others when they sit on the toilet and do it themselves. I’m somewhere in the middle. I started training my son a 2. I read a book called Potty Training in a Day. It had a list telling what signs to look for to see if your child is ready. He was so I took half a day off from work and we started.

It was brilliant. We started with a doll and he dressed the doll and put a pair of under pants on the doll. Then I told him to take the doll to the potty and went through the steps of how we go potty. He did all the steps with the doll. I has him check the dolls under pants every 15 min. Then the book said to wet the dolls underpants and then have the child check them. At that time you are suppose to have the child take the doll to the toilet and pee. It is best to have a peeing doll. I used a small medicine giver that squirted water to make it look like the doll went potty in the toilet. It worked great. He was going on the toilet that day and only had a few accidents throughout the week.

I think that the main key is that they are ready. Every child is ready at a different time. Here are some sites that might be useful.

Taking off his own clothes off

Wanting to wear big boy pants

Sitting on the toilet

Talking about poo poo and pee

Saying I went pee or poo poo

Increased interest in genitals

Follows simple instructions

Not liking dirty diapers

Asking to be changed

Re: When do I start Potty training?

This is a very nice idea, though I never resorted to the use of dolls... We just waited for signs, like telling us his nappy was wet, taking it off to wee outside and started offering the potty and/or little toilet seat.  We also asked him if he wanted to go to the toilet whenever we were going or 30mins after a big drink etc.  Rewards were obviously a very big part of training, as well as patience and being alert on our part.

It is probably a really good idea to list the signs for when a child is ready to potty train, since your advice is titled when do I start potty training...   Based on that title, many readers would be expecting to find information about the signs that show a child is ready to commence training and basic methods that can be implemented.

Excellent, you did too!  I hope you don't think this too forward, however I noticed that you have made a lot of advice postings and sometimes it is hard to tell what they are about.  The titles aren't always in direct reference to the topic you write about.  Minti has a search section for people looking for information on certain subjects and of course the advice shows up in other general web search engines... It is a good idea to have a very direct title and to add tags to your advice to enable people to find it more easily.  You may also find it enjoyable to participate in other areas of the site, like adding comments in Q&A abd blogs, joining groups, doing your own personal blogs etc.
