Recent crash test results on child car restraints.- Includes booster seats! (updated May 07)

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 13th)

Updated May 07 as link given in original article below no longer works

New link

The link will take you to the National Roads and Motoring Association (Australia) website to a page that contains advice regarding child car restraints including crash test information on booster seats, capsules

and child car seats.

We bought the Safe n Sound Safe guard convertible car seat and so far we have been very happy with it. When Natalya grows out of it we will see about the booster seat options available at the time, but for those of you looking at booster seats now this information could be useful.

Original article written August 06

We have been researching prams and car seats to work out what to buy for our baby (due 30/12/06).

I have been lucky enough to find a very recent (July 2006) brochure on child car restraints based on crash test results. It is by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV). The brochure can be viewed at

http://www.mynrma.com.au/files/1/Child_restraints.pdf

from the ones I have priced so far the most price competitive one listed in the brochure is the Safe-n-Sound Safeguard.

Re: Recent crash test results on child car restraints.- Includes booster seats! (updated May 07)
I hired a capsule from the ambulance.  I had actually bought a reversible car seat but it was a pain because if the baby was asleep getting her out would wake her up.  The capsule from the ambulance clipped out and it cost around $50 to hire it for 6 months.  She then went into the reversible car seat when that one went back.  It was a Safe n Sound but I can't remember the type.  She's now in the Maxi RIder, which is also safe n sound.  I like the look of the series but they were not being sold at the time we bought this one.  She has 2 maxi riders, one for our car and one for my mum's car.

We did a lot of research and shopping around too.  I was going to get a safe n sound, however we ended up with our 2nd choice - the babylove capsule for up to 8kg instead.  It was so cute, and it was well rated - however most importantly, it was part of the travel system, and we were fairly mobile, so it just clipped in and out of the car, and his stroller without disturbing him at all.  It was well worth the little bit extra that it costs (instead of just getting a convertible seat - we had to buy a new seat for him when he was 8mths old).  I looked after it really well, and because it is a great capsule, we sold it for only $20- less than we bought it for.

car seats

I reccomend always shopping around- i reember seeing a lady i know buying a car seat as it was the 'best' but very expensive. she found it marked down t oa really low [roce and decided to buy it. i asked her why it was marked down- and she said someone had returned it as the stabiliser arm was bent, like that mattered!?  I couldn't beleive she would buy a damaged carseat! luckily she wasnt involved in any accidents etc. but sheesh why take the risk!?

Re: car seats
Absolutely - like what would she have saved? $50 or something... Is that worth risking your child's life?  In fact, it was wrong for anyone to even sell it.

Car seats
In the UK, the Which? magazine is the place to go. They do independent tests to a higher standard that manufacturers have to adhere to. Seats only need to perform well in head-on crashes, and to be honest, side impacts are more common and these just aren't looked in to. Which?, however, so check the performance in these areas. Would you believe that certain manufacturers, like Mamas and Papas, are still selling a car seat that scored only 10 out of 100 for safety? I would always advocate doing some research - can you imagine finding out after an accident that the car seat you chose is a poor performer? Which? allow you to subscribe for 30 days for free, and in that time you can check out the info you need, without needing to spend a fortune.
