Daily exercise for you and your children

FremantleDocker by FremantleDocker Talking Back(January 2009) (rank 51st)

As everyone knows that in today's society, that exercise is important. I know it is and so do my children. There are days where the weather is just way too hot to go out side for a half an hour or hour walk, or doing any kind  of

exercise, or totally the opposite, being cold and rainy etc.

My family and i came up with a solution. We decided to make up a list of things we could do inside for exercise on the occassions i mentioned before. My kids are really health consious, and like to exercise all the time, so here is the plan stragedy we came up with, and they're easy enough to do in the house and we do them for about an hour a day.

  • Star jumps
  • Sit ups
  • Stretching whole body
  • Weights that you hold in your hand
  • lunges
  • jogging on the spot

These are just naming a few. We find these very rewarding and it keeps the childrens minds active aswell and doesn't get them bored either. We also make it fun aswell to see who can finish first with out being silly or going overboard.

My 5 year old especially loves doing these exercises ( except the weights of course ) as she and the other kids are always fit and healthy. Not every child will be willing to do these things, but maybe gradually do this every week or do something similar with them.

Re: Daily exercise for you and your children

I think excercise is important, even more so do partake as a family as parents are the most important role models.  We walk/run/ride together, (though I am very slack on the bike riding, I do get around the yard LOL).  We also go swimming at the pool and river together, play at the park regularly and we all do kickboxing, karate and general martial arts in separate classes as well as together.  We also do push ups, sit ups and stretches together at home and play with the many bats and balls lying around... Jaydee actually taught himself to throw a ball in the air and catch it the day before his 1st birthday.  He was bored and we let him go outside, then next thing you know he was running past the window throwing and catching.  How many kids do you have Kerri?

Re: Daily exercise for you and your children

Hi Lui. Great way in keeping fit there, and yes, i agree, we as adults are role models, and that's why i get in with the exercise also, and as the saying goes, monkey see monkey do. I try and keep positive about everything, and it reflex on the kids also.

That's great that Jaydee was able to throw the a ball into the air and catch it aswell. An excellent achievement. Well done to Jaydee.

I have 5 children Lui, but the older 4 ( 3 boys and 1 girl ) didn't want to be added to the list or talked about much as their ages are girl 13 next month, boy 14 ( 16 months apart ) boy 17 on 24th of this month, and boy 18 next month ( 11 month apart the elder 2 ) I had the older 4 a bit close together, then popped out miss 5 ( nearly 6 ) 7 years later.

Aha now that is no surprise, at that age kids are pretty precious about preserving their privacy ; )  It's great that you have a famiy excercise regime, it is so healthy and sensible.  Yes, he is a bit of a sporty kid, he is ball crazy, he usually sleeps with a ball and we take them everywhere ; )

LOL, yeah, that's right Lui. They sure do love their privacy. I"ve always believed in being healthy etc, and always wanted my children to be the same way, and 95% of the time they are.
That's so cute that your lil man sleeps with a ball.

Re: Daily exercise for you and your children

Excellent ideas I didn't know that you could get weights for littlies but a great idea as strength in the upperarms is something that kids today miss out on  . When I went to school we use to have this equipment called monkey bars and they were great for excersing your arms but they were taken out of schools because of safety issues.

Re: Daily exercise for you and your children

Thanks sandra106. Yeah, little weights that don't weigh much at all, and upper muscle strenght isn't my youngest daughters strength or strongest point.

I remember the monkey bars, yeah, safety issue is a bit of a worry sometimes but you have to think about the kids first on things like this.
