A Mother's Intuition

miss3mum by miss3mum In Nappies(January 2009) (rank 500+)

We recently went on a holiday that was suppose to last for a month but after the first week my 11mth old baby started to get a cough and it was when we left NSW to go the Sunshine Coast that things progressively worse,he's fever was quite hot but it

dropped after each dose of Nurofen. His father was thinking it was him teething cos he was at the time but I had this feeling that it was not his teeth. This went on for the next 4 days and his cough sounded like a grandpa and after hearing nothing good about the medical services in the Sunshine Coast I was going home to get my boy to a doctor. My partner thinks I overreact if the kids get injured or sick but this was a different feeling my instincts were to drive. When we arrived home late in the night the baby was not as restless as previous nights so I rested as well but by 5am I knew he was ill as he is normally up & playing instead he was breathing quite hard and really lethargic,by 5.30 I was going to call 000,my partner wanted me to wait until doctor opened,I hesitated and nearly listened but that mother's feeling mad me rush him to the car & up to the hospital. After arriving at 6am my boy got worse I had to shake and shake him numerous times to keep him awake as he was just going so limp. Finally after 2 hrs we were seen and the doctor was almost going to admit him as she thought it was chest infection boarderlining on pnuemonia. My poor little man I felt so useless as I knew it was bad but I also felt a great sense of relief that I made the decision to cut the holiday short.I can't bear to think what may have happened if I didn't go with instincts. A mother's intuition happens for a reason so try not to ignore it,be safe not sorry.

Trust your istincts. Even if dr says all is well. DR knows less than you about you and yours.

Re: A Mother's Intuition

4 days is a long time for a baby or young child to continue receiving home treatment for a consistent fever without seeking medical attention... The disclaimer from nurofen does state that you should seek medical advice for babies under 12mths and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist.  (I don't have a bottle handy, however I am sure it is also written on the bottle and the packet).

I am glad that your mother's intuition came through and your baby is well, however it may have been best to seek medical advice before you came home, even if you only used one of the 24hr helplines:

Kidsnet - The Children's Hospital at Westmead (1830 to 0100 Monday to Sunday and 0930 to 1630 weekends and public holidays).
Phone (02) 9845 2432
WEBSITE www.chw.edu.au/site/directory/entries/kidsnet.htm

Tresillian Family Care Centres (24 hour Parents Help Line)
Phone (02) 9787 0855 or Freecall 1800 637 357 if outside Sydney Metropolitan Area
WEBSITE  www.tresillian.net/

Karitane - 24 hour Care Line
Phone 1300 CARING  (1300 227 464) or  TTY (02) 9794 1848 - for hearing impaired

* Health  Direct - 24 hour help line for parents in Western Australia
Freecall 1800 022 222
WEBSITE www.health.wa.gov.au

^ Nurse On Call (Victoria 24 hour helpline)
Phone 1300 60 60 24 the cost of a local call, from anywhere in Victoria
WEBSITE http://www.health.vic.gov.au/nurseoncall/

^ Maternal and Child Healthline - Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne (24hr helpline)
Phone 132 229

WEBSITE http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Maternal_and_Child_Health_Line?OpenDocument

 +13HEALTH - Queensland Health (24 hour helpline)
Phone 13 43 24 84 - for the cost of a local call

When you are travelling with babies or children, it pays to make sure you check out where the local hospitals and pharmacies are, as well as the local medical centres and Doctor's on call.

Re: A Mother's Intuition

This is taken from the labels on both the nurofen packet and bottle:

*Do not give to babies under 3 months.Seek medical advice before giving to children under 1 year.  Repeat dose every 6 to 8 hours as necessary (max doses 4 in 24hrs).  Do not exceed stated dose.  For short term use only.  If your child's symptoms persist beyond 48hrs consult your doctor.  Children should take plenty of fluids.

I think you definitely should trust your mother's intuition, however act on it straight away, don't worry about where you are or what other people, (including your husband), may think.

Re: A Mother's Intuition

If I was in my home town I wouldn't of waited but we were close 1000kms to away, the surgeries that did open over that New Year weekend didn't accept new patients,I gave him correct doses 8hrs apart as I did ask at the pharmacy and the Emergency wards in both Caboolture and Nambour are chronically full. The next family holiday I go on Im going to ask my Dr to arrange a GP in the area I will be holidaying at.So glad to say the Koby is back to normal
