How Many Baby Clothes Do You Need To Have Ready For The Arrival Of Your Newborn Baby?

MotherofJWE by MotherofJWE Speaking(January 2009) (rank 308th)

This is a guide to help you plan for how many clothes to buy before your baby is born, which should last you up until about age 3months. From there you will have more of an idea as to what you will need and may even start to dress your

baby in pants and T-shirts. Although I still mainly used suits up until my son was learning to pull himself up. I have made recommendations based on the climate in SE QLD. You may need to adjust this according to your climate and according to whether your baby is born smack in the middle of the season or towards the end. It is sometimes a good idea to make sure these clothes are gender neutral to save taking home from the hospital a surprise boy all dressed in pretty pink!

A SPRING BABY
3 x 00000 rompers
2 x 00000 bodysuits
12 x 0000 rompers
3 x 0000 bodysuits
3 x 000 bodysuits

A SUMMER BABY
3 x 00000 rompers
2 x 00000 bodysuits
12 x 0000 rompers
3 x 0000 bodysuits
3 x 000 bodysuits

AN AUTUMN BABY
3 x 00000 rompers
2 x 00000 bodysuits
9 x 0000 rompers
6 x 0000 bodysuits
6 x 000 bodysuits

A WINTER BABY
3 x 00000 rompers
2 x 00000 bodysuits
3 x 0000 rompers
12 x 0000 bodysuits
12 x 000 bodysuits

romper - short sleeved all-in-one suit
jumpsuit - long sleeved, with legs, all-in-one suit (I recommend closed in toes- although they tend to grow out of them quicker, and optional mitten/sleeves for cold nights)

Re: Baby Clothes Needed For A Newborn Baby

What you need to keep in mind is that in working out quantities per size I have worked this out not based on their immediate needs but on what they will grow in and out of - ie. a summer baby may not get a lot of wear out of a bodysuit but may still fit come autumn... you see??  The 00000's on some babies are onyl any good for about 3 days, but during those 3 days you may need to change clothes a few times.  But you don't want a full wardrobe of 00000 when they could grow out of them so soon.  You can always skip the 00000 and put them in the next size up straight away...but its nice to have a couple of outifts that fit nicely when theya re first born.

Re: Baby Clothes Needed For A Newborn Baby

I'm a bit confused about the sizing... When Jaydee was born, he was only 2.5kg, however I wouldn't have wanted anything smaller than 0000 and they only fit him for a couple of weeks.  I was quite happy to have him in rompers, (onsies) that were a larger size and he spent the majority of his time wrapped in muslin anyway, (summer baby).  I found a hat, mittens, nappy and a wrap were what we used the most, we only put the rompers on him when we went out and cute outfits were really just for show.
