The joy of giving to others in need

mewannaboy by mewannaboy Speaking(August 2006) (rank 237th)
we all know how much joy we get from giving to people in need . wether that be in a donation to a charity or a gift underneath one of those xmas trees they set up in the large shopping centres, even buying a ticket in a raffle for cancer or something but i have found a site on the net that i have been a part of for months now that has given me a spark of joy also it is called "freecycle" as in free recycle. The group im with in Newcastle Freecycle and is the best site ever. You know those items that gather around the house like camping gear or a mirror or unused bridal magezines well the people on freecycle are after these items. People post ads on the site it could be a wanted or an offer ad. What this site is aiming to do is keep items out of landfill that may be able to be put to good use for people in need. One of my biggest rewards has been helping a family in desperate need of clothes for their family of 5 or an elder lady who needed a scratching post for her new cat.Im always helping people out.I more recently helped a women who needed materials ,buttons and lace to make crafty things for children with disabilities its so worth while and i want anyone who can to join this group. Im not sure wether it is only based Australia but there are groups for different areas of Australia just get online look up your area and you will need to fill out an application all of ten minutes.I hope to help someone everyday, not to mention the things i have recieved. I was desperate for clothing for my daughter as she was growing out of everything and a nice lady bought me a huge box of items to help me out.that gave me a grin from ear to ear and a lump in the throat. Just give it a go and see the joy it brings you.

Great alternative

We have always donated our stuff to the Salvos or other charities always being concerned whether or not the stuf was getting to those who needed it. We saw a documentary not so long ago about how most of the unwanted goods we donate end up being purchased by merchants who then flog the goods to shop owners in third world countries. Then those items were purchased for a relatively high price by those who could least afford it. A great idea. We are just about to pass on all our baby things and a load of toys. We will definitely be using Freecycle. Thanks Mewannabot

Freecycle and giving to others
I believe kids and people in general are spoilt these days - Okay my kids are! I know they have way too much stuff and if I can give that to people who will appreciate it I feel grateful for that opportunity. I was told about the freecycle site and I think it is a wonderful idea. I think consumerism is a problem and I think it is helpful to only have what we need rather than what we want.

It's one thing to put it in the brotherhood bin.....
but when there are people actually asking for things and you have it, there is more of a sense of satisfaction that your unwanted goods really are wanted and will be used.  We do give unwanted goods to humanitarian services.  What a great idea this 'freecycle' is.  Most people like to help others;.....that is why we are here on Minti.  We are recycling our experiences in hope to helps others.

It's a pleasure
It is a pleasure to help others, even is only a second hand stuff. I always teach my kids too that many people out there that less fortune than our and will appreciate the stuff that we have. We either give our second hand goods (but still useable) to Good Sammy or Salvation Army...or even direct to someone we knew who need them.

donating/helping others
I think it's an awesome idea. I put my pop bottles outside by the garbage bins so that people(who need them) can take them. My husband actually gave me that idea, so I went with it. I was never againist it, I just never had thought about it.
About every few months we go through the stuff that we don't need and we put them in garbage bags and bring them to a place where they take them, or sometime's they come by our place to pick them up. I have always helped out this way and I will contuine doing so.
Thank you for posting this, It was great to read!!!

Freecycle

I am a frecycler, and I must say that I rave about it to everyone I meet. You can find it at http://www.freecycle.org/

I have just been out to pick up some bath toys for my little ones and have a whole load of things that I am about to offer out. We have acquired cot sheets (let's face it, they rarely wear out), clothes, plants (got my first peas the other day), a nappy bin and even a climbing frame. We have given away lots of things, including the nappies left over in the pack when the kids grew too fast. This is such an excellent scheme. Here (UK) we call the shops that take in second hand things and sell them on for a cause Charity Shops, and I feel a little bad that they are missing out on some things, but my thoughts are that if someone is hard up enough to be prepared to take second hand bedding and furniture from strangers, they shouldn't have to pay for it. I have always used second hand stuff when we can't afford new or are saving up, and I love it when I get a great bargain. If I can also help people by giving away things I no longer need, then that also gives me a buzz - everyone is happy.

So, I concur - sign up, clear out and collect some other bits to fill their place!

Freecycle
Yes you are right the charity places are not always so charitable. When we first moved here we were in need of beds for two of our girls and even saint vinnies ans samaritans were asking $50 for a bed, people in need haven't even got $2 let alone $50 so i love seeing freecyclers get items ,be greatful and thankful for what you have given for nothing more than satisfaction.

helping others

I think this is a great idea. Some things in the house that are no longer useful to us may do a family a world of good. Especially when it comes to old clothes that our youngest children may have outgrown. What use is it if it's just going to sit in the a box in the attic? Might as well help others in need. I also like the fact that it does prevent landfills from filling up.

I haven't used such a website, but what I do is to look through my closet near the end of the year and get rid of clothes that no longer fit, or that I haven't used in years. Then I haul them to a local charity to donate. The good thing about this is it is tax deductible!

Great idea! I'm not sure why this would be getting such poor votes.
