Unique Baby Names

wishes4onemore by wishes4onemore In Nappies(January 2009) (rank 500+)

I personally have chosen to give my children some what unique names.I wanted them not be be the third child in their class with the same name.I wanted them to feel as though I took the time and effort to look for something a bit different, something special.Their names are

not weird or too outrageous like "Apple" or "Zuma" but they are far from one of the top ten baby names.I get comments sometimes from people like "thats a lot of name for a baby",he will not always be a baby I reply.I don't make annoying comments to people that chose to give traditional names to their children,I expect the same respect from others.I also got some rude comments from family members who prefer traditional names. My advice to any parent when naming their child is to go with what you like. Many people will try to force their opinion on you to try and change your mind. This is your child chose a name that is special to you and you will never regret it.

Re: Unique Baby Names

I agree great article!  I too can remember chosing my son's name and knowing that it was just perfect.  I too prefer the less common names and cant stand it when people give their opinions on your child's name and put you down.  We named our son Mitchell which is not very common.  We named him after my mother-in-laws father who was killed in a press when she was 2.  This was his surname.  Naming your baby is a very personal choice and everyone should respect your decision.

Re: Unique Baby Names

Love the article! I agree that your child's name shouldbe meaningful, and reflective. I can honestly remember the exact moment I chose both of my sons names! They were such special moments because it was like THAT'S IT!!! That's his name! You know, it just feels right. Personally, I also like the less common names. I have never met anyone with my first sons name (although I have heard there is a little boy with the same name in a town about 40 miles from here), and my second son is the only one in his school with his name. My second son has the same name as my boys' father- but is still uncommon    :)

Re: Unique Baby Names

I agree with you 100%, what a lovely little article... Where do people get off giving you their opinions about your child's name?  If they can't say it's nice; then they really don't need to say anything do they?  Jayden isn't very unusual, however I actually named him for a couple of my favourite cousins that I hung out with as a kid, (JAson & hayDEN)... Stephen actually picked Jayden from a list of 3 that I offered, (I can't even remember the others).  I had a few firm offers for a middle name from both sides of the family, so I settled it by choosing Stephen and naming him for his Daddy, (I'm so glad I did).  Jayden means 'God has heard' so I love saying God has heard Stephen; I think that's got to be a good thing.  As you say, it is a very personal choice and I hope everyone else gets in on the act and adds some comments about their kids names too.

Re: Unique Baby Names

I feel the same, I was one of the many girls in my class with what I am sure my parents at the time would have thought was a pretty and little less mainstream name - which turned out to be very popular for that year. With this in mind we named our  daughter with a name that we thought was sure to guarantee her to be the only one in her class - not so turned out she is one of 2 sometimes 3.

We have now very unusual names for our other two girls, and have stuck with a traditional name for our boy because it suited him better.   But they all start with T which is kinda corny but wasn't planned (we could only agree on those names for the first 3 and searched high and low cause we didn't want to leave 1 out lol)

Re: Unique Baby Names

we went a litte old school for our son, we had the "family / required" middle name of Harris, and we were thing of maybe Drew, Bram, Rhys, Isaac, or Chad, but were holding off the final decisions till we had met him, he ended up naming himself, he arrived roaring and was promptly named Leo,

it fits so well!

we couldn't have asked for a better name for him, and while it;'s not a unique name there are no other Leo's in his daycare, and i personally dont know of any other Leo's under the age of about 65,

i think as long as the child can grow up with the name and be proud to see it on a diploma hanging on the wall or be knighted (LOL) with it not sounding silly then go for it,

we were trying out baby names for soon to arrive, and my mohter in law, was going Sir >>>>>, nah that wont work, fun at the time but i guess you do need to look to all situations in the future
