Belly Casting

MEL192 by MEL192 Crawling(January 2009) (rank 500+)

I knew my second pregnancy would be my last (hubby didn't want any more children). So I wanted a way to remember what I looked like when I was pregnant.  Photos were one way, but it didn't really capture how big my tummy was. One day when I was

looking on the net, I found out about 'belly casting'.  This is where a mould is made of your pregnant belly using plaster.

This can be done in a studio by professional (for a large sum of money).  So I ruled it out. That was until I found out about a do-it -yourself kits.  These are available on the internet.  Look around, because there are some that are expensive and some that are more reasonably priced, safe and environmentally friendly.

I found a great kit. I got hubby to help me (it takes a bit of time and is a bit messy - follow the instructions). My belly cast is now one of my favourite pieces of art in our house.  I am always surprised when I look at it.  I was huge.

Now when my pregnant friends come over and talk about how big there tummy's are, I can go and get my belly cast, hold it in front of me and compare my tummy to theirs - mine is always biggest (not that size matters).

It is a wonderful momento of the beautiful changes that happened to my body. I can't wait until my boys grow up and can apprecitate looking at where they came from.

If you are considering a belly cast, I completely recommend getting a do it yourself kit.  It is a wonderful piece of art and a beautiful memory.

Re: Belly Casting

Hi, I also created my own belly mask for my boys!! and put photo's over it to tell their birth story for the 6months of their life.

I have helped created many more hundreds of mums to have something the same or have a kit so they can create it at home.  The cost basically say double if I create it as you can appreciate the time that goes into it and afterwards. I love decorating them, so if you have a mask at home and need some inspiration or help..just ask :)

When looking for a kit on the web make sure they have natural products in it :) remember a couple of things like more plaster is not necesarily better as it means the plaster might be weak so you need more and the more you have the long and hotter it will get....if you have any other questions I am more than happy to answer them

Re: Belly Casting

That is so cool and very interesting. I have heard of this but always thought a professional had to do it and I knew that would cost heaps. I didnt know you can get 'do it yourself' kits. I actually might consider doing that when i have another baby

Can you tell me where you got your kit from?

Thanks

Re: Belly Casting

Do you have a photo?  How BIG was your belly?  I hadn't heard of this until another member posted a great article, (that was unfortunately copied from various existing sites).  I had a look online and some of them were so artistic and imganitive, I think I'd get it done if I ever got got pregnant again.  I'm glad you wrote this advice and your writing style about this topic cracked me up - size doesn't matter ; )  LOL!

Re: Belly Casting

Baby feet and hands are quite common, but I'd never thought of a belly cast! Might have to do that next time... if there is a next time... I'm not sure I want a next time... the last one was sufferance enough... and I need to find a male of my species first... but I'm pretty sure they're all extinct now. LOL Wish I'd seen this a long time ago.
