Layering for warmth

mcm by mcm Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 5th)
To keep warm, a child may need to wear layers. Layering is the most effective way of keeping your child warm. In our house we have floorboards and no carpet so it can get very cold here.
I truly believe natural fibres are best ie. wool and cotton.
A
good rule of thumb is if you are chilly, then baby will be too. When going out, baby will benefit from an extra layer.
This is what my 9mth old baby wears, for an example, singlet, long sleeved bodysuit, long sleeved top and pants with padders or socks. When we go out, I will put a jacket on him plus a blanket, if we are going in the pram. The car tends to be warmer, and there overheating can be a concern (another article)

polished floorboards and getting cold

I also have polished floorboards and it does get cold in here, so i'm always checking my daughter to see if she's too cold or too hot.

Rule of thumb
I think the rule of thumb is same number of layers as you - plus one.  So if you have a skivvy, and jacket on bubs will need a singlet, top and jacket.  That is what I was told, and generally it still works for us too - but E is like a hot water bottle at night whereas I tend to be cooler, so sometimes at night i have to removed blankets and resort to just the sheet for her for a while.
Peace

wool
wool is great as it helps take moisture away from baby (sweat for example) and keep baby warm, while breathing, great for preventing over heating too :)
