Missed Period, Not Pregnant

demonikangels by demonikangels Standing(February 2009) (rank 491st)

Today I was talking to a young girl about her friend, who is 16 and has not had a period since before Christmas. She has only had sex recently (2 weeks ago) and thinks she could be pregnant.

I had to explain that a period being absent from before

christmas could not be linked to a pregnancy which occured 2 weeks ago, so I looked up what it could mean if you haven't had a period and I was shocked to find so many reasons that no one thinks about first, their first assumption is pregnancy.
I think it is important that if you dont think its possible for you to be pregnant, but your period is longer than 3 weeks absent that you seek the advice of a medical professional.

Some reasons your period could be late:

  • being underweight, or anorexic
  • PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
  • anxiety
  • marijuana use
  • some antidepressants
  • phenothiazines
  • Premature Ovarian Failure (early menopause)

I thought this was interesting and might benefit some women, so I thought I would share.

Re: Missed Period, Not Pregnant

I recall having difficulty conceiving.  Every time I was a couple days late on my cycle I was so excited.  There was one time that I was a couple of weeks late and I was sure in my mind that I was pregnant but I wasn't.  I determined it was sue to stress.   This is good advice.  I guess it is important to pay attention to the signals that our bodies give us.
