Toddler Teeth Brushing

OOTHbaby by OOTHbaby Talking Back(March 2006) (rank 80th)

Toddler teeth brushing is a hard one (what isn't with kids!), and it does take perseverance and consistency.  A little each day, make it fun for them.  Show them how to do it and then let them brush your teeth (or just poke it around in your mouth).  Then

take it in turns to brush each others teeth.  Let them try and do their own and then ask if Mummy or Daddy can help them.  Slowly they will get the idea.  Another tip - if mum & dad both have electric toothbrushes, then I'd suggest getting a younger version one for your toddler (they love copying) - now he can be like you.  This is what worked for me and worked well - I have a 2y 3m old who now asks to brush his teeth!

Hope this helps.

Great activity in our home
Teeth brushing is one of our special times in our home, we both do our teeth and we race to get to the bathroom and our toothbrush ready each - then we do our own and then I do hers quickly afterwards.

LazyTown (childrens telly) has a "twenty times up, twenty times down" song - so we sing as we brush!  Magical moments
Peace

Perhaps make it a game
I read on a blog recently (sorry cant remember which one) that you can make brushing into a game where you are catching "Sugar Bugs"...

Every now and then stop the brushing and pretend to grab a "Sugar Bug" off the hairs of the toothbrush - throw it to the ground and stomp on it. Toddlers love to make games from things and the hunt/catch routine makes tooth brushing a bit more interesting :)

Electric toothbrushes
I did look in to electric toothbrushes for my 2 yr old, but the ones I saw all state that the child should be over 5, I think. Have you found any that are more appropriate for younger children?

Routine is the key
I agree it's all about making a part of the routine.

Our little 14 month old gets upset when she can't brush her teeth at the appointed time before bed.

Bath time
I am trying to get our little toddler boy to brush his teeth. Have been trying to about a week now and suspect he will allow me to brush his teeth in about 3 weeks.

I brush my teeth in front of him when he is in the bath (having his bath). This way I have a captive audience. It isn't long after starting that he takes the toothbrushes (mine and his) away from me and sticks one of them in his mouth to suck. He also likes to reach out to me and make sure it goes in my mouth whilst he is holding it.

I think by making it look fun and perseverance, he will come around to letting daddy do it properly for him ;)
