Don't Tiptoe Around During Naps

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(August 2006) (rank 12th)

Today's First Time Parenting Tip - Don't tiptoe around during daytime naps

Your baby just went down for a nap. Finally, you can get something done! You reach for the vacuum cleaner...oh wait. Baby's asleep. You go to flush the toilet. Rats, sleeping baby again. You need to open

a bedroom door that creaks. Better not till baby wakes up.

All rules you should break.

It's good for babies to learn to sleep with other things going on. It'll be easier for them to go down in a strange environment with new sounds, and it'll help you get around to chores while they sleep peacefully. As they get older, will babies naturally become conditioned to sleep with noise.

Noise

Absolutely agree!  But some babies and kids are just naturally light sleepers.

I have one of each.....my oldest would sleep through an earthquake. My youngest will sleep through anything during the day but at night will wake up if walk past his door ( we have tiles).

I couldnt agree with you more. My son actually sleeps better when he is out and about with me and around tons of background noise.

Does this work for husbands sleeping after a nightshift?
If this works for husbands sleeping during the day because he worked all night ,then there goes my excuse for using the computer instead of cleaning the house!

Nightshift(not sh*t), although it is a pain in the but. My hubby worked nightshift for a few months. He always had a hard time sleeping when we were either in or out of the house.

noises

I actually have never tiptoed around when my son naps when he was an newborn. He has heard all sorts of noice in my tummy while he's in there so why be quiet when he comes out? He has also heard the dogs bark no doubt, that's why he was never startled when the dogs bark.

However, now that my son is 17 months old, we do have to tiptoe. I have a CD playing a lullaby on repeat while he sleeps, but when we enter in and out of the room, he gets all excited and wants to wake up. So we do tiptoe now.

Luckily for us, our bub wont sleep unless there is noise. so also luckily, we have an incredibly noisy freezer, which satisfies his need for noise throughout the night. noting gets turned down of off. Everyone shhh's whe they are around and he is a slepp,. but we tell them not to!

Naps

I do agree on this one again!! When my daughter has daytime naps, I am never quiet. The TV is up loud(well normal volume) and the dog is never quiet that's for sure!!!! He bark's and she will still sleep. You should never be quiet when it's the daytime naps. When we go out shopping, my daughter falls asleep in her carseat and it's always busy and nosiy when we're out.
Only time I'm quiet, is when it's her bedtime, then I make sure everything is quiet for her. I turn the light's down low, and turn the volume down.

Excellent advice!

Don't tiptoe around naps
When grub was a newborn, he would sleep in the lounge room sometimes during the day ( I wanted him to be able to sleep anywhere, not just in his cot). I would vacume around him. I knew it was all ok when he was about 4 months old (winter) and we had the washing machine and dryer going, my dad was mowing on the ride-on, and the people next door had an excavator in doing work. He didn't budge.
