I've made a 15 hour flight with a 14 month old

Re: Travelling on a flight with a baby

Question:

My baby is just 13 months old and  I have to travel with her on a flight  alone. It will be a long flight of 8 to 10 hours. What precautions should i

take while travelling and how will i manage to keep the baby food with me ,I am still breast feeding my baby. I dont know how the baby will adjust in the long flight.

My Advice: First I would advise that you pack your carry on bag well. You will only be able to have a small bag on the plane, so make what you put into it count! Make sure you have 2+ changes of clothing, plenty of nappies, jars of food if you'll need those (the flight attendants will heat up jars of food for you if you ask) and some finger snacks like Cheerios. I also recommend taking a few new board books with good pictures to keep your little one entertained, as well as a couple of new and interesting small toys.

Also, does your child have a lovey? A stuffed animal, blanket, etc that she is attached to? Make sure you take this!!! If you are worried about her not sleeping, take her to the pediatrician before the flight to ask about medication to help her sleep. There are simple, over the counter medicaions that are helpful if you have a little one that gets super-unsettled on long flights. Just make sure you get your Doctor's advice on this one!

We survived a nearly 15 hour flight from LA to Australia after flying 8 hours from DC to LA with our then 14 month old son. It wasn't exactly fun, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I wish you the best of luck with your trip!
