Potty training

Question:

Can i get tips on potty training

My Advice:

There are lots of things to try to potty train your child. What works for one will not necessarily

work for another, so try a few different approaches. Try to stick with each approach for a few weeks before discarding it and switching to a new one. A few suggestions:

When you go to the toilet, put them on the potty near you so she can see you. Talk to her about how exciting it is, i.e: "Look how much fun you can have on the potty!" and make some sound effects as well. Give her a sheet of toilet paper to put in the potty, and get her to wash her hands as you do. Kids love to imitate, so this works for some.

If you can afford it, buy a potty that has an inbuilt reward system, or anything that makes it fun to use. There's ones with lights, bright colours... there's even potties that play music when you poop in them! If you can only afford a basic one, trick it up with stickers so it looks fun. Get your child to decorate it herself, so she will be more inclined to use it.

You could try the reward system i.e: a sticker chart, so every time your child uses the potty she gets a sticker. Or a star chart, and when you have 5 stars you can give her a treat or an outing, something she likes to do.  Buy some big girl (or boy) undies and show her what she can wear when she uses the potty. Give her lots of praise if she sits on it, and remind her of the rewards when she does so.

My mum trained all 3 of her children just by letting us run around the backyard naked- the theory behind this is that you can feel it running down your legs and also see it, whereas in the nappy its all contained. When the child can see it and feel it running down her legs, she learns to associate that with the feeling of needing to go. And as its uncomfortable to have wee and poop on your legs, she will hopefully learn to use the potty this way.

Good luck!

Whoa... The one star vote was a bit out of line?!  So even though I think there are more than enough potty training articles on the site that cover most of the items mentioned here, I must say they are all worth a try.  This article is also well written and well presented and certainly adds value to the topic, thanks for sharing.

Re: Potty training

LOL, I bag out the fact that there are hundreds of articles that don't offer new advice, however this part of yours is rarely mentioned:

'When you go to the toilet, put them on the potty near you so she can see you. Talk to her about how exciting it is, i.e: "Look how much fun you can have on the potty!" and make some sound effects as well. Give her a sheet of toilet paper to put in the potty, and get her to wash her hands as you do. Kids love to imitate, so this works for some.'

That's the part that I liked the best; you are the best role model for your child and this is very sensible advice!
