Busy Toddlers!!!

rkcrtbrown by rkcrtbrown Speaking(August 2006) (rank 500+)
I don't know about any one else but i use to have a real hard time trying to prepare dinner and keeping my toddlers busy and out of things they are not suppose to be into. They always seem to get into those things, cupboards ect when i am busy getting
dinner ready. We have older cupboards and have been unable to find a safety latches for them. So i am careful with what i put in the lower cupboards. I have a  2 in a half year old, and the twins are 15 months.
Besides having a gate on the main floor that has the living room dining room and kitchen. Tons of things for toddlers to get into. I keep some toys upstairs in the living room but that does not keep them busy while i am preparing a meal. For my two in a half year old, on top of the fridge I have activities. (all from the dollar store) She has her crayons, colouring books, stickers, sticker books, and puzzles that are kept up there. I bring them down during those times. It still remains a novelty to her. She chooses an activity and does it the kitchen table. These are things that her brothers can get into and she has to do them at the table where they can't reach. The boys who are 15 months, I bring up some toys that they have not played with for a while. Something that will keep their interest so I can get something done. Sometimes, i just give them a bowl and a measuring spoons. It works and dinner preparation is much easier.

YOUNG EINSTINE...
I forgot to mention.. My son is not a big fan of telly, which is probably a good thing really.. But if you can get your hands on Walt Disneys Young Einstine DVD's they are the only thing he will sit down and watch all the way through.. They are amazing.... And well though of for kids.. My son is 15 months old and really I could rave on about these DVD's.... It is basically, music with images and some puppets.. It is fantastic for little minds... And it is not rubbish it is actually good for their ever learning minds....

Give them a cupboard...
I have given my son a special cupboard just for him... Finding which one I did not need was a hassle, but I managed to move a few things around to make him his own space.. And now that he has his own to play with he is happy, I put all the plastic bowls, cups and tupperware down there... He just has a ball, I am happy because I can prep dinner and he is happy making his own fun...

snack or playdough

If the TV does not hold my children's attention.  I give them a small amount of food.  Or give them playdough.  Something to keep them going.

I am renting now and I am not able to put safety latches on all the cuboards I have the extendable variety but I find them a nusiance.  So If my daughter wants the plastic cupboard all along the floor while I get to cook I just let her.

It can all just go back in the dishwasher again.  If I get my meal cooked I'm happy.

Toddler in the kitchen
Toddler like to immitate us. If you have some space in the kitchen you could put small table and let them play cooking with play dough of even just with wooden spoon and plastic bowl. For older toddler/preschool, sometime they would like to help, I sometime gave my son a carrot or zuchini to cut.

Dinner speedy

Tv is great.  But if they are especially out of control.  If they miss a nap.  Don't go for the four course meal.  Make a very simple meal.  I've made things like toasted cheese sanga,  My own mini pizza's.  Maybe get them involved is also key I've been told.  My son loves to cut even with the sharp knife.  Less stress and they eat it too.  A added bonus.

TV babysitter
I also do all those things you mentioned to keep the kids engaged during meal prep's... but I must also confess to using something I never thought I would prior to becoming a parent.  The TV!  My twins would zone to Teletubbies when they were little and Dora works wonders for my current preschooler.  Thomas the Train is good for little boys, my friends tell me.  Whatever works!

Meal times

When i make big meals i freeze some  for another day for supper. I also try making things ahead of time, like spaghetti sauce. It makes life so much easier. Especially chilli is an easy one to freeze, and make more of.   Hope this helps
