Is my baby too small, (or too big)?

Question:

My baby is 1 and still fits some 000 clothing should I be worried.

She eats plenty.

My Advice:

As the answers have suggested, if your doctor is not worried then

don't panic.

However, do you feel something is wrong? Sometimes the parent is the best judge of what is really going on. Don't panic, just investigate further, especially with family members to find out if there are any genetic links.

* Are the family members of small stature, even great-grandparents can contribute to this, maybe there will be a growth spurt at 18 months

*Is your baby putting on weight? Good colour skin, generally happy, interested in the world?

*Is your baby sleeping well, waking for feeds, settles down without too much fuss?

*As silly as it sounds, sometimes the clothing labels are just bad sizing - too big or too small, too wide, too narrow etc.

Just try to remember babies come in all shapes and sizes, little bundles of mystery with no instruction book but their own input. If it was someone else who suggested your daughter is too small, maybe they are just used to giant babies. There have been some whoppers born lately!

If you are still worried check again with your doctor, even go to another doctor if you are not satisfied with their advice.

I went to 6 different GP's to get a referral to a paediatrician so my son could be assessed. They all said I was being panicky and overly worried and he was fine, but I knew he was changing so I persevered and although I would rather be a neurotic mother and my son not have Autism, at least we have somewhere to aim for and therapies and people to help us.

I hope this helps and I give everyone a pat on the back for being "Professional Parents" even with no prior training.

Nicely written article. Sometimes we as parents just need a little reassurance. Babies can be a mystery, and they certainly come in all shapes and sizes. Well Done!

The one thing that no one ever tells a mother about growth charts is that they are based on statistical averages.  They don't take into account genetics or enviornmental factors, so they are not 100% true for everyone.

Nice article and great tips on what to look for in child growth.

I too have a small baby. She is 9 months and still in 000 , but some 00 are fitting in length but still look big. she is growing on the 10th percentile on the groth charts. I have been told that as long as the baby stays on the same percentile as they were born and doesnt go down then they are ok, just small or big or average. they are all different. if your still worried go and see a dr.
